GET SNAPPING FOR THE GREAT YORKSHIRE SHOW

Photographers young and old are being urged to get out their cameras and capture some inspiring images of their favourite woodland.

For the second year running, the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, organiser of the Great Yorkshire Show, is challenging people to celebrate the splendour of the UK’s woodlands and forests by taking part in a photographic competition.

With the theme “Seasons in the Woodland”, the Society is urging “snappers” to head for their local woodland and take seasonal pictures, depicting the area in either spring, summer, autumn or winter.

The best 32 images will go on display in the Forestry Pavilion at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show, which runs from Tuesday 10 to Thursday 12 July. The Great Yorkshire is England’s premier show attracting around 130,000 visitors each year. The event includes a dedicated forestry area and pavilion, with demonstrations and a wide range of classes – from woodland management to marquetry to woodturning.

Visitors to the show, which is held at the 250-acre showground on the edge of Harrogate, will be asked to vote for their favourite photograph, with the winners announced after the event.

Last year’s competition attracted dozens of entries from amateur photographers from across Yorkshire, with the overall winner, Janet Burdon’s wintery scene of Farndale, North Yorkshire, capturing visitors’ imagination.

The competition is split into two categories – juniors (up to and including 16 year olds) and seniors (aged 17 and above).

Winners in each category will be awarded £50 Jessops vouchers, and the overall winner will receive a £100 voucher.

All entries, of woodlands or individual trees, need to reach the Yorkshire Agricultural Society by Friday 1 June 2012 for a chance of success.

Great Yorkshire Show, Tuesday 10 – Thursday 12 July 2012

This year sees the 154th Great Yorkshire Show. It is organized by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society and is England’s premier agricultural show. Each year some 130,000 visitors come through the gates to see the best of British agriculture and experience country life as well as hundreds of stands selling everything from furniture to designer clothing. Around 10,000 animals, including cattle, sheep and horses, compete for the top prizes. The event is held at the Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate. Gates open at 7.30am each day.
