Inspiration for Prospective Entrepreneurs at Careers Event
A new look careers event in North Yorkshire will be encouraging young people to take the initiative and start their own businesses.
As well as showcasing a wide range of employment opportunities, the Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s ‘Careers in Focus’ event, which takes place on Tuesday 8 October at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate, will feature a new Young Entrepreneurs section.
A number of Yorkshire-based young businessmen and women have been invited to attend for the first time and will be talking about how they set up their own companies, and encouraging pupils from schools across Yorkshire to “make their own careers’ instead of following more traditional employment paths.
Tom Kitchen-Dunn, who set up Chickadee Education from his home in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, two years ago, is one of a number of young entrepreneurs taking part in the event.
He tried a variety of different careers before deciding to start his own business, supplying eggs and incubators to schools across the region to enable pupils to experience chicks hatching live in their classrooms.
“It was an interest of mine and I wanted to turn it into a business. This is something that you can do – what can be more exciting than making your own career?” said Tom. “I am looking forward to Careers in Focus, and encouraging people to think about their hobbies and interests, and how they can turn it into a career.”
Around 2,000 secondary school pupils from across the Yorkshire region are expected to attend Careers in Focus, which is a one-stop shop to talk to experts and learn more about a whole host of employment paths.
With around 100 interactive stands and displays representing a wide range of careers, students will be able to learn about careers ranging from construction and engineering to healthcare, horticulture and law.

The Yorkshire Agricultural Society was formed in 1837 and is a charity dedicated to supporting the farming industry and rural life. This ranges from educational initiatives to the Society’s Nuffield Scholarships to hosting the Yorkshire Rural Support Network.
