Youngsters from primary schools across Yorkshire are being invited to find out all about apples at a new event being held at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate.

For the first time, the Yorkshire Agricultural Society is celebrating National Apple Day on Wednesday 21 October with a special apple extravaganza for schoolchildren.

The Society, best known for organising England’s premier agricultural event the Great Yorkshire Show, has invited more than 150 pupils from schools across the region to Harrogate for the day.

The Society has its own small orchard at the showground, growing 16 different apple varieties which make up the Yorkshire Heritage Collection, including Flower of the Town, Ribston Pippin and Dogs Snout.

As well as learning all about apple growing and the different UK varieties, pupils will be given the chance to juice apples, taste them, and put their crafting skills to the test with activities using recycled materials.

Di Kirkman, the Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s Education Adviser said National Apple Day was a great opportunity to recognize the wealth and variety of apples grown in the UK.

“This is part of the Society’s ongoing work to raise awareness amongst children about where their food comes from. We want to inspire and enthuse them about the wonderful range of apple varieties and their versatility and that there are so many more varieties than Granny Smiths!” she said.

The educational event is being run by Clifford Cain, whose Doncaster-based business Fruitscape, which educates and promotes fruit growing across the UK.

Headteacher, Mrs Christine Gabbott from Pickhill CE Primary School, said 18 Key Stage 2 pupils would be taking part in the event, and the school was looking forward to being involved.

Other schools involved include: Hackforth & Hornby C of E Primary School, near Bedale; Holy Trinity Primary School, Halifax, Overthorpe Academy, Dewsbury, Willow Tree Primary School, Harrogate and Lilycroft Primary School, Bradford.
