Men’s Health on the Agenda for Yorkshire Rural Support Network
The importance of Men's Health will be in the spotlight at the annual meeting of the Yorkshire Rural Support Network on Tuesday 25 September at the Great Yorkshire Showground. The event is open to all, and particularly those with an interest in health.
Professor Alan White, Founder and Co-Director of the Centre for Men’s Health at Leeds Metropolitan University is the headline speaker at the event which will be attended by those working in the rural community to support men and women suffering from stress.
“The issue of men's health is an important one within the rural community as there is a clear link with mental wellbeing,” said Kate Dale, the Network's Co-ordinator. “Farmers are more likely to go to their GP with a physical problem and that's often how depression or stress is first picked up.
“Professor White is an internationally renowned expert and is currently working on studies connected with both Leeds Rhinos and the English Premier Football League so his talk will be hugely informative I'm sure,” she said.
Prof White is Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Men’s Health Forum (England & Wales). He will give a presentation of the recently published Report on ‘The State of Men’s Health in Europe’.
Recently he has been working at Headingley Stadium in Leeds to establish health checks for the supporters of the Leeds Rhinos Rugby League team and is undertaking the evaluation study of Premier League Health for young men, which is being run through the English Premier Football League. His research work also includes work on men’s experiences of illness including coronary heart disease, diabetes, prostate cancer and penile cancer.
The event takes place in The Calder Room at Pavilions of Harrogate at the Great Yorkshire Showground between 10am and 12.30pm. It is supported by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society as part of its work in supporting rural life in the North of England. The Network’s “Fit for Farming” booklet, which outlines how to stay healthy will also be available.
