Haunt Prison Hill This Halloween
Yuma Territorial Prison hosts trick or treating, pumpkin contest
YUMA, ARIZONA – An old community tradition will rise from the grave this Halloween as the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park opens its creaking iron gates to ghosts, goblins -- and trick or treaters age 12 and under.
To be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Halloween (Sunday, Oct. 31), the “scary and safe” trick or treat venue is being sponsored by local, state, tribal and federal law enforcement agencies, along with the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area, which operates the prison.
Trick or treaters will gather goodies “cell to cell” through the prison’s original granite cell block, where they’ll be greeted by “inmates” from two dozen local businesses and nonprofit agencies that volunteered to host and decorate a cell.
Proceeds from an admission charge of $1 per person will benefit the Arizona Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics and the Crossroads Mission.
Entries in the “Great Pumpkin Extravaganza” carving and decorating contest will be on display around the prison grounds. The free contest is open to pumpkin artists of all ages but all pumpkins must be dropped off at the prison by 2 p.m. on Halloween for judging. Lights will be provided, but pumpkins cannot be returned.
Pumpkins can be carved, decorated or embellished – let your imagination escape! First, second and third prizes will be awarded in these categories: Adult (18 and older), Youth (ages 13-17), Kids (ages 7-12) and “Punkins” (age 6 and younger).
