The 23rd International Conference on Nuclear Engineering was held in Makuhari Messe, Japan, in May 2015. ÅF was represented by Henrik Hildesson and Lingfu Zeng of Nuclear Engineering.

The International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE) is the premier global conference, which since 1991 has been annually held in American, Asian and European continents for addressing the current and future needs of the nuclear industry around the world. This year’s conference, ICONE23, gathered nearly 800 engineers and scientists in the world, to discuss the state-of-the-art techniques, the current status and future needs of nuclear power industries worldwide. The main theme of ICONE23 is “Nuclear Power — Reliable Global Energy”.

In the conference, about 700 speeches delivered in over 140 technical sessions. In addition, ASME committee meetings, panel discussions, tutorials, technical tours, sponsor exhibitions and student-paper-competitions were held during the conference. Prior to the conferences, special workshops were also held on several key topics, such as Nuclear Codes and Standards, Seismic Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA), Fukushima Event, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and others.

The highlighting topics were:

  • The Fukushima accident
  • Nuclear safety and security
  • Severe accident
  • Long-term operation
  • Waste management and decommissioning
  • Fusion technology
  • Next generation
  • Small modular reactors

Government agencies from e.g. Japanese Ministry of Economy, US Department of Energy and European Commission, and key industry companies like Westinghouse, Toshiba, Kansai Electric, Chinese National Nuclear Co., Korean Electric Power Co. and others called for global commitments, collaborations and responsibilities for making nuclear energy “reliable, clean, affordable and accessible”. The Fukushima accident, known as the Great East Japan Earthquake Disaster, has cost until today more than 190 billion JPY only in Japan and public acceptance is therefore the most difficult issue within the “Global Nuclear Renaissance”.

ÅF has been one of the conference organizers for the past conferences since 2009, and Lingfu Zeng delivered a speech on structural integrity assessment methodologies.
