Work has completed on three hangars at the new Defence College for Technical Training at MOD Lyneham in Wiltshire.

The  hangars have each been newly built or refurbished by Hercules - a joint venture between Kier Group and Balfour Beatty - for the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO). The buildings, which include two extensions to existing hangars, provide workshops, stores and classrooms to cater for the Army’s Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME’s) training needs.

The remodelled hangars and their extensions are part of the phase one of work on the new college and are the first of 90 facilities that Hercules is providing at the former RAF site under the MOD’s £121 million contract.

Graeme Wildridge, DIO Lead Project Manager said:

“This is a significant milestone in the delivery of the new college at Lyneham.

“This project is a fantastic example of how we are supporting our Armed Forces by providing the right facilities in the right place to meet their needs.

“The close working relationships and team effort between all those involved within this project has resulted in the early handover of facilities.”

Richard Collin, Hercules Deputy Project Director added:

“We are proud to have delivered the first in a series of buildings that will see the MOD Lyneham site transformed. Working with DIO and the services, we aim to continue to provide best-value new and refurbished assets for the new college.”

Once complete the college provide new single living accommodation for trainees, purpose-built teaching facilities, Mess facilities, offices, a large outdoor training area, a publicly accessible museum for the REME and a Garden of Remembrance.

Development work is scheduled to have been substantially completed by the autumn of this year, when the first staff and students will arrive at the college.
