  • Renal care tender awarded based on quality of patient care by Birmingham NHS Trust following competitive process
  • Diaverum will establish four new renal care clinics, bringing the total number of Diaverum clinics in the UK to 16
  • Number of patients under Diaverum care in the UK grows to over 1,000

London / Munich, October 16, 2013.  Diaverum, Europe’s largest product independent and one of the world’s leading renal care service providers, has been awarded by the University Hospital’s Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust a tender covering four clinics and 350 patients. This brings the total number of Diaverum UK clinics to 16 and gives Diaverum a 20% share of the UK market.

Diaverum will build and equip the new clinics with state of the art medical equipment and each clinic will have free parking for patients and staff, wifi and patient individual freeview televisions. The new clinics will be located nearby the existing clinics in the Birmingham area, which will ensure a convenient and seamless transfer of patients and staff. Furthermore the staff operating the existing clinics will transfer to the new Diaverum clinics, ensuring continuity of care for patients.

With over 20 years of renal care expertise, Diaverum has been operating in the UK market for 12 years and has a strong track record of delivering holistic patient care in partnership with the NHS, Trusts and leading consultants. By recognizing the UK renal commissioning and care structure, Diaverum works closely and transparently with its partners to provide the best care for patients and deliver the best value for money.

Commenting on this success, UK Managing Director Mick Hartnett said. “This is a very strong message to the market. It demonstrates the confidence both the NHS and University Hospital’s Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust has in Diaverum as a truly viable private sector partner. They are acknowledging our patient centered focus and how we are able to optimize limited health care budgets to deliver value, investment and patient excellence in the health care system.”

With the clinical responsibility of the patients remaining with the Trust, Diaverum will continue to work closely with the Trust to investigate opportunities to broaden the healthcare services offered and further improve patient care. In addition to offering haemodialysis treatment, Diaverum will promote self-care and work with the Trust to identify other treatment modalities, for example introducing nocturnal dialysis.

Commenting on self-care Mick Harnett says, “Studies have shown that patients who take more involvement in their own care tend to enjoy a better quality of life due to gaining more independence, with improved medical outcomes. We have seen very positive results in our other clinics for patients participating in some form of self-care, and we look forward to continuing this work in Birmingham.”

Patients will also benefit from providing feedback via a short quarterly patient questionnaire, the patient passport system and the patient education material which Diaverum will introduce across the new clinics.

Commenting on the Diaverum approach, Dag Andersson, CEO and President of Diaverum said, “While the UK is growing strongly, the senior management remains very close to our clinic operations, and are highly accessible for patients, staff and the referring NHS renal teams. This means our senior managers have an intimate understanding of customer needs and are thus able to act quickly and decisively to ensure our service always delivers. Working with iWantGreatCare in the UK, is enabling us to use patient feedback to provide the best renal care possible and create a standard of quality.”
