Ten new kidney centres in Sicily

Munich, May 30th, 2013 – Diaverum, one of the world’s leading renal care providers, announced the acquisition of ten kidney centres in Sicily, Italy. The clinics provide renal care to more than 300 patients suffering from kidney failure. With this acquisition, Diaverum Italy is the number one independent renal care provider in the region and the second largest private provider of renal care in Italy.

Dag Andersson, CEO and President of Diaverum commented that this acquisition shows the “excellent reputation Diaverum has worldwide for its quality of care - treating more than 22000 patients worldwide. Payers, public authorities and patients trust in us. Our aim in Sicily is now to significantly enhance medical outcomes and operational efficiency in these new centres by quickly integrating them to the Diaverum model.”

Adding the clinics to the network, Diaverum is now operating 18 kidney centres in Sicily with almost 600 patients and a total of 32 clinics in all of Italy treating almost 1500 patients.

“I am very happy to welcome the new staff members to the Diaverum family. All doctors and medical personnel in the new clinics will stay with us, since we know how important a long-term trusting relationship is for chronic patients. With our experience of conducting more than 3 million dialysis treatments per year worldwide, we will further enhance the staff’s knowhow to provide the highest quality of care to the Italian patients. And we certainly hope to inspire our new colleagues with the special touch that we have at Diaverum”, said Gianpaolo Barone Lumaga, Managing Director Diaverum Italy.

An acquisition of this size is not uncommon in the healthcare market. In Italy as in the rest of the world, the management and care of chronic diseases is experiencing a trend for privatization, the reason being that private providers can often deliver high quality care at a competing price.
