Diaverum strengthens its presence in Portugal's central region, through acquisition of Nefropinhal clinic in Sertã
Malmö, Sweden, 15 July 2025 – Diaverum, the Swedish-born global renal care provider, today announced the completion of its latest clinic aquisition in Portugal. Located in Sertã, approximately two hours northeast of Lisbon, this clinic will strengthen the company’s presence in Portugal’s central region, furthering its mission to provide life-enhancing renal care in the country.
With infrastructure already in place to operate 20 dialysis machines, the new clinic has capacity to scale its operations and treat up to 120 patients, supported by a multidisciplinary team comprised of nephrologists, nutritionists, pharmacists, nurses, and social workers. This strong foundation will enable seamless integration into Diaverum’s global clinical ecosystem, while enabling future enhancements such as expanded digital services and advanced therapies.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains a significant and growing health challenge in Portugal, affecting around 1 in 5 adults, many of whom are unaware they have the condition until it reaches advanced stages. Access to care can vary between urban and rural areas, with patients in interior regions often travelling long distances for treatment. Local expansions in renal services are therefore essential for equitable care. Recognising this, Portugal launched a National Strategy for Renal Health and Integrated CKD Care, running from 2023 to 2026, focused on prevention, early detection, and integrated care. By welcoming the Nefropinhal clinic in Sertã into the Diaverum network, the company is directly supporting this goal, bringing world-class renal care closer to patients and strengthening access where it is most needed.
Rafael Romanini, CEO of Diaverum, said: “This acquisition is another important step in our commitment to enhancing the lives of people with kidney disease, by offering world-class renal care underpinned by our innovative, digital solutions. By expanding our presence in Portugal’s central region, we are ensuring that more patients have access to high-quality treatment closer to home, while reinforcing our promise of True care to every patient, every day.”
Sofia Correia de Barros, Country Manager for Diaverum Portugal, added: “It is a great honour for Diaverum Portugal to be entrusted by the founders of Nefropinhal to carry on their legacy and welcome the clinic into our network. We recognise the vital role this clinic plays in the local community, and we are committed to ensuring that patients in Sertã continue to receive high-quality care close to home, supported as always by our True care culture. At the same time, we look forward to supporting the clinic’s dedicated team, offering them the opportunity to grow within a global organisation that values their expertise and dedication.”
Following this integration, Diaverum Portugal now operates 28 clinics nationwide, promoting local community coverage and supporting equitable access to renal treatment across the country.
