Balder’s upper secondary school named “Stockholm Building of the Year 2019”

The “Stockholm Building of the Year 2019” is Anna Whitlock’s Upper Secondary School on Kungsholmen, voted as the winner by Stockholmers themselves. The capital city’s largest upper secondary school with 2,500 pupils was created in an extremely short period of time by Balder in collaboration with the City of Stockholm.

“Our goal has been to create a very pleasant environment for both pupils and teachers. I view the award as a fine recognition that we succeeded,” comments Erik Selin, CEO of Balder.

For the tenth consecutive year, Stockholmers had to vote for their favourite building in the competition arranged by the City of Stockholm. Apart from an aesthetic focus, other criteria included sustainability, innovation and the building’s importance for Stockholm as a city. Anna Whitlock’s Upper Secondary School competed in an intense contest with nine other buildings, including Nationalmuseum, Innovationen and 79&Park.

The jury’s motivation was as follows: “A proud building for proud pupils. Allowing young people to have access to this building is fanstastic in every way. A public building has a public content. A respectful reuse of a robust architecture, carefully accomplished with a magnificent result.” The winner was announced on Wednesday at a ceremony in Kulturhuset. The award, in the form of an engraved bronze plaque, was given out by the Chairman of the jury, the Vice Mayor for City Planning Joakim Larsson.

“We feel honoured and delighted that the City of Stockholm has chosen to locate such an important activity with us. By building this way, we are saying who we are. We want to do this again in Stockholm or in other cities,” says Erik Selin.

Anna Whitlock’s Upper Secondary School - which was opened ahead of the autumn term in 2018 - is located in the building on Kungsholmen that previously housed the County Adminstrative Board’s operations. The City of Stockholm rents the entire property via Sisab, which has entered into a long-term rental relationship with Balder.
