The starting shot is now being fired for Västra gatan

Today at 11.30 a.m., Balder turned the first sod for Västra gatan in Kungälv, a construction start which has its starting point in the past. With new apartments and unique businesses in the ground floor, Balder wants to contribute to the comeback of Västra gatan as Kungälv’s popular artery. As far back as 1996, Erik Selin acquired his first property in Kungälv and now Balder is continuing to develop both the area and the properties.

- It feels really great to continue the journey that began back in 1996. Partly, to continue to refine the land together with the Municipality and Skeppsviken, and partly because we hope and believe that the development will generate positive effects for the city as a whole, says Balder’s CEO Erik Selin.

Balder’s CEO Erik Selin, the Chairman of the Municipal Executive Board Miguel Odhner and Skeppsviken’s CEO Davor Sinik will be on-site to turn the symbolic first sod together.

- This day symbolises both the development and the reclaiming of the old Nya Kungälv – as it became known when the city was moved in the 17th century - with Västra Gatan and nearby areas. We are now digging down to create parking spaces and are making space for apartments and restaurants. Kungälv is a very strong regional location. Step by step, we will together build the City by the river, which with its history, water and fortress, will strengthen our Kungälv, as one of the Gothenburg region’s absolutely most attractive locations in the future, says the Chairman of the Municipal Executive Board Miguel Odhner.

Balder will develop 128 tenant-owner’s apartments and about 10 premises, of which two are restaurants, on the ground floor along Strandgatan and Västra gatan. An underground garage will be constructed under the buildings. Mobility solutions will also be available in the area, including in the form of pool cars.

The heart of Kungälv is characterised by history and tradition, where wellbeing, security and accessibility of meeting places and streets has created a good living environment. Balder wants to safeguard this. Kub arkitekter have designed the buildings, which with their wooden facade and small-scale look, will blend in with the other buildings on Västra gatan. Courtyards are planned in the blocks, offering space for meetings with the ambition of creating a secure and comfortable living environment. The buildings are being constructed in accordance with Miljöbyggnad silver rating.

- We are proud to have been chosen as a contractor and to play a part in developing Kungälv’s city centre. This is an inspiring project, where good planning, sensitivity and dialogue with the external environment are important aspects, says Davor Sinik, Skeppsviken’s CEO.

Balder’s investment is connected to the Municipality’s ambition to develop the centre into a mixed-use district with a high level of densification. Based on the current planning scheme, the number of residents in the city centre will double from today’s level of 3,500 to 7,000 people. This means that Kungälv city centre needs to be expanded with 2,000 new apartments.

Balder are offering media representatives the opportunity for interviews and photographing at Glasbruksgränd, in Kungälv, today Tuesday, 16 February from 12.00. In view of the prevailing situation, this will take place outdoors and according to appointment with Balder’s Head of Communications Sandra Nilsson, see contact information below.
