Are these the chocolatey classics of tomorrow? Fazer to begin presales of plant-based oat choco and milk chocolate with no added sugar

Fazer is responding to customer wishes and rising food trends by introducing two new chocolatey innovations. Fazer is introducing two new small tablets, plant-based Fazer Oat Choco and Karl Fazer Crispy Mint milk chocolate with no added sugar. They will be available as limited editions at Fazer’s own sales outlets from 24 June.

Customers have been asking Fazer for new additions to our range of chocolates, and now these wishes are being fulfilled. “Our talented chocolate technologists managed to develop delicious solutions to two challenges: a plant-based product and a chocolate with no added sugar,” Fazer Group’s Head of Research Jussi Loponen is happy to tell us.

One of the new innovations, the plant-based Fazer Oat Choco, was created by pairing Finnish oats with responsible cocoa. The flavour of oats is soft and mild, yet easily recognisable. In the new manufacturing process, this distinctive flavour profile complements cocoa, resulting in an enjoyable oat choco that melts in the mouth.

Fazer is investing into oats on a grand scale

The new oat choco product is tightly linked to Fazer’s strategy as a forerunner in oats. Fazer has been using oats as a central ingredient for many years, developing different oat-based drinks, ice creams and snacks. Soon, Fazer will also be producing oat-based xylitol at the new plant being constructed in Lahti, Finland.

“We are investing in expertise and technology related to oats. We have mills in Finland and Sweden. In addition to our beloved classics, we want to introduce new plant-based options in all our categories. We have now taken our first step towards oats in our confectionery business, and we can also make use of this new innovation in other products,” Loponen explains.

Focus on flavour – no added white sugar

The other new product that will be available for tasting this summer is Karl Fazer Crispy Mint, a refreshing milk chocolate with no added sugar. “We are launching a test sale of our new chocolate that contains no added white sugar. The product was developed with the focus on flavour, and I think it will live up to chocolate fans’ expectations,” Loponen says. The new chocolate is sweetened with xylitol.

Limited test editions of both new products will be available at Fazer Cafés and the Fazer Experience Visitor Centre and online at Fazer Store after Midsummer. The goal is to have them more widely available in stores in 2021 or 2022. During the test sales, Fazer will collect consumer feedback to develop the products further.
