Beloved Pullava now baked without palm oil

Oululainen Pullava, Finland’s most bought* sweet loaf is now totally free of palm oil. This sweet bun is just as tasty as before – and now it’s even moister! The palm oil will be replaced for the most part with rapeseed oil, and in some Pullava sweet loaves filled with vanilla pastry cream coconut fat will also be used. Fazer is committed to developing the sustainability of its products, and sustainable ingredients are an important part of the company’s development work.

Fazer is going forward with eliminating the use of palm oil in its bakery products. From the end of spring, Oululainen Pullava sweet loaves will no longer contain any palm oil. The forever favourite Pullava has been on sale ever since the 1970s.

“In the new Pullava sweet loaves, palm oil has been replaced with rapeseed oil and coconut fat. The sustainability of the replacement ingredients is also important,” says Juhani Sibakov, Director of Product Development, Fazer Bakeries.

Fazer is continuously looking for new solutions that can be used to improve the sustainability of its products and production. Fazer is investing in innovations to eliminate palm oil from its products and is researching ways to increase the use of such ingredients that are more acceptable to consumers and whose environmental footprint or nutritional value is better than that of palm oil.

At the same time Fazer wants to preserve the delicious flavour, texture and mouthfeel of Fazer products. Palm oil cannot be replaced in all products with just one ingredient, but Fazer is looking into different solutions for different products, while ensuring that the delicious flavour profile of products does not change.

In 2022 all the palm oil used by Fazer was RSPO certified and the share of segregated palm oil – which is kept apart from traditional palm oil through the whole value chain – rose to 98 per cent. In absolute terms, Fazer used 58 per cent less palm oil in 2022 than in 2019.
