As part of its ambitious sustainability approach and actions to mitigate climate change, Fazer conducted a carbon footprint study on Fazer Aito Oat Drink in collaboration with an external expert. The carbon footprint is 0.23 kg CO2e/kg, which is a small footprint for a food product. Fazer’s goal is to cut emissions by 50% by 2030.

One litre of Fazer Aito Oat Drink, including the product packaging, has a carbon footprint of 0.23 kg CO2e/kg. The amount is equivalent to the emissions caused by using a filter coffee machine for three hours. The study produced a theoretical calculation of how much Fazer Aito Oat Drink produces greenhouse gas emissions during its life cycle. The calculation takes into account greenhouse gas emissions caused by growing and producing raw materials for the oat drink, producing the oat drink and its packaging as well as energy and fuel consumption. Recycling of the packaging material has also been included in the calculation. The usage and storage of the oat drink by consumers are not included in the calculation.Fazer invests in the continuous development of more sustainable products. To cut the carbon footprint of Fazer Aito Oat Drink, the use of fossil materials in the packaging has been reduced: both the cap and the carton material have been replaced with bio-based alternatives. The production process of the oat drink has also been made more efficient.

– It is important for us that the whole life cycle of Fazer Aito products is as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible. It makes us happy that the carbon footprint of Fazer Aito Oat Drink is very small for a food product. Already 50% of Finns use plant-based drinks in their daily lives*, these small choices really make a difference, says Brand and Category Director Susanna Kallio from Fazer.

Fazer’s ambitious climate goals are aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions

The carbon footprint calculation of Fazer Aito Oat Drink is a part of Fazer’s climate work as one of the company's four sustainability Core goals focuses on reducing emissions. Fazer aims to cut down emissions by 50% by 2030. In order to advance the implementation of its sustainability work, Fazer has committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which means that the targets Fazer sets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions are based in science. According to SBT, Fazer will refine concrete climate goals and develop the cooperation model with its suppliers to reduce emissions in its own operations as well as in the entire supply chain.

– Plant-based products have an important role in achieving Fazer’s sustainability targets’, states Fazer Group’s Sustainability Director Sari Sarin.

The Fazer Aito Oat Drink carbon footprint study was conducted by LCA Consulting. The study included a critical evaluation by a third party. The carbon footprint study and calculation were conducted in accordance with the requirements of life cycle assessment standards ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 as well as the carbon footprint calculation standard ISO 14067. According to the calculation performed in the study, the carbon footprint of the product is 0.23 +/- 0.04 kg CO2e per 1 kg product. The minimum and maximum values were defined by performing sensitivity analyses.

The study included all the following stages of the product’s life cycle:

  • The production of the essential ingredients and packaging material for the oat drink

  • Growing raw materials, purchasing, processing and production of ingredients as well as transportation in the supply chain
  • Energy and fuel consumption
  • The oat drink production process: energy and water consumption and usage as well as production and use of cleaning chemicals for the production equipment
  • Side stream processing at the mill and oat drink factory
  • Transportation of the finished product to a central warehouse
  • Recycling the packaging
