Fazer and SOS Children’s Village support families in need of help in daily life by inviting them to dine together

At the beginning of 2022, Fazer started as the main partner of “Grandma and Grandad’s house” (Mummun ja vaarin tupa) operations organised by SOS Children’s Village. The activities focus on daily family life, and within the framework, voluntary seniors have provided support for hundreds of families with children by joining together to cook and enjoy a meal. Fazer’s active partnership with SOS Children’s Village also created joy and well-being in March, when a donation of almost EUR 35,000 was made to the organisation as an outcome of Fazer’s cooperation with the yarn manufacturer Novita. The sum will be used to fund hobbies of almost 100 children from low-income families. Fazer has cooperated with SOS Children’s Village for more than 50 years.

The purpose of the Mummun ja vaarin tupa operations is to bring together, at an early stage, senior volunteers and families in need of help. The structured activities are targeted at families who lack extensive support networks. The activities include cooking together, playing, and spending time with the children. Volunteers ensure that the time spent together gives parents a moment to catch their breath, meet other adults, and eat together.

“We’ve been supporting SOS Children’s Village for more than five decades. When we signed the follow-up agreement last year, the Mummun ja vaarin tupa operations were chosen as our main target, as the objective of the operations combine food experiences, which are key to us, with SOS Children Village’s firm expertise and genuine humanity. During the first, not even full year of operations, 264 sessions were organised at the Mummun ja vaarin tupa premises with more than 5,600 visitors, of whom 3,000 were children,” says Liisa Eerola, Vice President, Communications & PR, Fazer Confectionery and Fazer Finland. “Among the volunteers are also employees who have retired from Fazer. Such meaningful voluntary work surely brings joy and strengthens the well-being of everyone involved.”

The operations are currently running in Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa, as well as in Kaarina, Kuopio and Oulu. Tampere will get its own Mummun ja vaarin tupa location soon. The target for 2023 is to bring approximately 9,500 adults and children together for a shared meal.

SOS Children’s Village’s stresses the significance of food as a means of care

“Every child has the right to grow in a safe environment and enjoy good and sufficient food,” says Maria Ulvinen, Corporate Partnerships Manager at SOS Children’s Village. ”Food is one of the basic pillars of well-being for children and young people, and shared meals have far-reaching effects on children’s lives. Our operations at Mummun ja vaarin tupa enable warm encounters over shared activities and great food that again provide opportunities for peer support and interaction.”

Almost EUR 35,000 for SOS Children’s Village from the woollen sock project

A unique collaboration was initiated in the autumn of 2022, when Fazer and the famous Finnish yarn manufacturer Novita launched their first joint Fazer x Novita knitting magazine. The sock knitting patterns bursting with colour and inspired by Fazer’s most famous sweets brands and classics charmed knitting lovers and woollen sock knitters across generations. Following the huge popularity of the first magazine, a second knitting magazine, brimming with ideas featuring biscuits, liquorice and chocolate brands was published in January 2023. Of each magazine sold, one euro was donated to SOS Children’s Village, which was selected as the charity target as Fazer’s long-term cooperation partner.

The profits from the magazine sales – almost EUR 35,000 – Novita donated to SOS Children’s Village in March 2023. The donated sum will be used to fund hobbies of almost 100 children from low-income families.

“With this cooperation, we want to remind Finns that we can all do something good with our hands, even when we’re sitting on the sofa at home,” Eerola continues. “At Fazer, we have embraced artisan skills over our entire 130-year-old history. Traditional craftsmanship and sustainable food production still go hand in hand.”
