The SIHTI project examined how Finnish companies are fulfilling their human rights responsibilities in relation to expectations set out in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. The research was carried out during 2020 by the Swedish School of Economics and Business Administration (Hanken), FIANT Consulting Oy, 3bility Consulting and the Human Rights Centre. The assessment focused on 78 Finnish companies, one of them being Fazer. Fazer was assessed as part of the “agricultural products” sector and got 21% of the max scores.  The sector average was 26,7. The results indicates the level of communication Fazer does publicly on the coverage of our Human Rights related policies and processes. The content of public information in Fazer’s website has historically not contained detailed information about internal processes, like HR processes.

Due to the selected assessment methodology, Corporate Human Rights Benchmark (CHRB) methodology, Fazer as a food company was categorized in the “agricultural products”. However, the selected category had an impact on the scoring as Fazer doesn’t have own agricultural operations. Despite of some challenges with the selected methodology, the study gave Fazer valuable insight in the information that stakeholders are expecting on the Human Rights practises. We encourage our stakeholders also to read the SIHTI-project report for more details of the research process.

According the Human Rights policy, Fazer Group is committed to operating in a responsible manner and respects all human rights. Fazer’s respect for human rights is made operational by following the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). Fazer is also committed to supporting and applying the ten principles of the Global Compact in the fields of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. The implementation happens through our policies and processes which are continuously monitored. Fazer reports on its progress in the implementation of the ten principles of the Global Compact in the Annual Review.

Based on the results from the SIHTI-project, we are currently up-dating our documentation on Human Rights and improving publicly available information on Fazer’s Human Rights practises.
