Fazer has introduced the first electric lorry in Finland for bread transport: Rye bread is transported from Lahti to Vantaa without generating any emissions

Finland’s first electric lorry is now transporting Fazer bread between Lahti and Vantaa. The new lorry can be recognised by its Reissumies look.

Since July, an emission-free semitrailer combination lorry has transported freshly baked rye bread from the Fazer bakery in Lahti to the Vantaa distribution centre.

“Fazer Group aims to cut its emissions by 42% by 2030 compared to 2020. We’re also taking the first significant steps in the logistics of Fazer Bakery Finland by initiating emission-free freight transport. With our new electric lorry, we can transport thousands of pallets of bread a year without any carbon dioxide emissions. The introduction of the electric lorry cuts the CO2 emissions of Fazer Bakery Finland by approximately 23,000 kg every year, compared to emissions of a diesel lorry,” says Marko Bergholm, Managing Director at Fazer Bakery Finland.

“We plan to further increase the share of emission-free transport in the future. We regularly estimate and measure the carbon dioxide footprint of our bakery deliveries, and we’re already using biogas lorries, for example. We will introduce more electric lorries on our routes whenever possible,” Bergholm continues.

The electric lorry can cover the distance between Lahti and Vantaa without recharging, as the battery range is 300 km in the summer and 220 km in the winter. The electric lorry’s operator is Storemen Logistics Oy (Logitri Oy).

42% less emissions by 2030

Caring for the well-being of people and the environment is part of Fazer's heritage and future. Fazer aims to be an innovative pioneer.

Fazer is committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and the climate goals comply with the objectives of the Paris Agreement and aim to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Fazer focuses on increasing the use of fossil-free fuels and energy efficiency. Together with various suppliers and partners, Fazer is striving to decrease emissions throughout its value chain.

The side of the electric lorry is covered by a Reissumies decal that says in Finnish: “This electric lorry leads the way for Reissumies. Runs without emissions.” The adjacent QR code leads to a website where you can find more information about the topic and Fazer’s sustainability themes.
