Fazer actively monitors shifting consumer trends and requirements and introduces bold innovations to drive the development of the food industry. True to its innovation agenda, Fazer launches vegan Taste the Future Oat Choco toffee hearts that utilise okara, a side stream of oat drink production and surplus from confectionery production The novelty is packed in a reusable box and will be available as limited edition from 6 May 2024. The exciting innovation is a part of Fazer’s agenda for developing the future of chocolate.

Consumers are increasingly aware of the impact of food on both well-being and the environment and expect companies to provide solutions for sustainable lifestyles. Reducing food loss is one of the key means of minimising the adverse environmental impacts of food production, and Fazer has pledged to reduce its avoidable food loss by 50% by the year 2030 from the 2020 baseline. One important initiative is to reduce food loss through valorising underutilised production streams.

Fazer Oat Choco toffee hearts – upcycling oats in a delicious way

Taste the Future is Fazer’s concept for innovative novelties with unique, sustainable ingredients. The novelty-to-be-launched, Fazer Taste the Future Oat Choco toffee hearts are vegan friendly and utilise upcycled raw materials. The hearts are filled with okara toffee that utilises the side stream of oat drink production and they are made using underweight Karl Fazer Oat Choco tablets. The confections are packed in a reusable box that is made with compostable materials.

“Fazer’s commitment to sustainability is a key catalyst for our creative R&D advancements. The choco hearts may sound like a classic but the ingredients we use are new into the game. Not only are the ingredients new, but we have had a talented product development team with a real interest and motivation in developing delicious and sustainable plant-based innovations”, says Annika Porr, Senior Manager at Fazer Confectionery’s Forward Lab.

The delicious oat choco hearts taste like sweet caramel. and have a silky, premium-like structure The chocolate shell is rich in cocoa and the aftertaste of oat is mild and pleasant, resulting in a soft, distinctive flavour profile and enjoyable oat choco hearts that melt in the mouth.

In line with Fazer’s commitment to remove palm oil from all its confectionery and biscuit products by the end of 2026, the oat choco toffee hearts are also palm oil free.

Fazer Cafés and Gateau stores perfect platforms for pilot sales

The limited edition of Taste the Future Oat Choco toffee hearts will be available at Fazer Café Kluuvikatu 3, in Helsinki, at Fazer Experience Visitor Centre in Vantaa and at selected Gateau stores in Sweden from 6 May. Taste the Future Oat Choco hearts bring Fazer’s fearless creativity to life

More than half of the raw materials in the oat choco toffee hearts are derived from underweighted Karl Fazer Oat Choco tablets. The package has an upcycled label to denote that it contains upcycled materials.

“In food production, it is impossible to eliminate process loss completely, but raw materials should be reused as efficiently as possible – as Fazer confectionery has been doing for decades”, continues Annika Porr.
