Fazer Pure Dark chocolates to become vegan friendly

Fazer is changing the recipe of its popular Fazer Pure Dark chocolate to make the product suitable for vegans. The renewed packaging also features information on the beneficial health effects brought by dark chocolate. In addition, Fazer is introducing a new flavour early in the new year: Fazer Pure Dark Crunchy Hazelnut.

The change is achieved by tweaking the chocolate recipe in a way that allows the previously used milk fat to be left out. Pure Dark chocolate made with the updated recipe no longer contains any dairy or other animal-based components in its ingredients.
 

“Fazer has been getting consumer feedback for a long time asking for chocolate that would be compatible with a vegan diet. Now, we are fulfilling these wishes by making Fazer Pure Dark chocolates suitable for vegans. We are also introducing a new flavour: Fazer Pure Dark Crunchy Hazelnut”, says Riina Hagman, Brand Manager at Fazer Confectionery.

The change will be rolled out in stages in different stores. Products following the new recipe will be labelled as vegan friendly* on the packaging.

About Fazer Pure Dark chocolate

• Fazer Pure Dark chocolate contains 70% cocoa. Pure Dark is a high-fibre chocolate rich in flavanols, potassium and magnesium, which have beneficial effects on the nervous system and blood vessels and help to keep the body’s energy levels up**. Fazer Pure Dark is the first Fazer product to be marked with the Fazer Brainhow logo. The Fazer Brainhow logo indicates that the product is a particularly good choice for the well-being of the brain.

• According to a health claim approved by the European Union, the flavanols in cocoa help to maintain the elasticity of blood vessels, which promotes normal circulation. To extract their health benefits, 200 mg of flavanols should be consumed daily as part of a well-balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. One can get this amount from just under one third of a bar of Pure Dark chocolate.

• Pure Dark chocolate made with the updated recipe no longer contains any dairy or other animal-based components in its ingredients. However, the product is produced on a line where milk is processed, so the possibility of cross-contamination does exist. We want to give consumers all the information they need about our products, and therefore, Pure Dark has voluntary labelling on its packaging that states “May contain other nuts, almonds, milk and wheat”. Additionally, we have now added “Produced on the same line as milk chocolate” to the labelling on the packaging.

*According to vegan experts (the Vegan Society of Finland), a product may be termed “Vegan friendly” if its ingredients do not contain any animal-based components.

**As part of a well-balanced and healthy diet, potassium promotes normal functioning of the nervous system and maintaining a normal blood pressure, magnesium helps to reduce fatigue, and cocoa flavanols help to maintain the elasticity of blood vessels, which contributes to normal blood circulation.
