Fazer’s innovation promotes oral and dental health – Fazer Xylimax products now contain Fazer Xylitol

The benefits of xylitol are well-known to most Finns. Xylitol is used to lower the levels of acid producing bacteria, to reduce dental plaque and to enhance overall long-term oral health. Now Fazer will further shift to using xylitol that it produces itself, Fazer Xylitol, in its Xylimax products. Fazer Xylitol is produced from domestic oat hulls at Fazer’s xylitol factory located in Lahti, Finland. Fazer’s xylitol chewing gums and pastilles are produced in Fazer’s confectionery factory in Lappeenranta, Finland.

Xylitol is a well-known sweetener to most Finns and can be used as a substitute for sugar. Products made with xylitol have been proved to reduce dental plaque, high level of dental plaque being one of the risk factors in the development of caries. Sugar-free chewing gum sweetened with xylitol contributes to maintenance of tooth mineralisation and reduction of oral dryness. During 2023, Fazer’s chewing gums and pastilles sweetened with xylitol have been gradually shifting to using Fazer Xylitol.

Unique technology in production of Fazer Xylitol

Fazer is leading manufacturer of oat products in the Nordics and the Fazer Xylitol factory is an excellent example of the company’s profound know-how in oats. Fazer uses a unique, patented technology to produce xylitol out of oat hulls, generated as a side stream from Fazer’s own oat mill.

As the production process of Fazer Xylitol uses a raw material – oat hulls – that earlier has been discarded, it is not only unique, but also sustainable. Founded on the principles of circular economy, Fazer Xylitol is an excellent example of the importance of sustainability, underpinning the company’s strategy. Sustainable food production plays an important role in mitigating climate change and in securing biodiversity, which supports securing the availability of raw materials in the future too. Circular economy is one means to improve the use of resources.

Finnish Fazer Xylitol to be used in all Fazer Xylimax products

During 2023, Fazer’s chewing gums and pastilles sweetened with xylitol have been gradually shifting to using Fazer Xylitol. A Fazer Xylitol marking on the packaging indicates that the product contains domestic Fazer Xylitol. At the same time, Fazer renews the packaging design of its Xylimax chewing gums and pastilles to refresh the visuality of the familiar brand and to emphasise the Fazer Xylitol ingredient on the front of the pack. Along the renewal, the standing feature of the chewing gum bags will be removed. Changing the packaging does not impact the taste or shelf life of the products, but it decreases the amount of plastic used in the packaging by up to 11%.

Fazer Xylimax products come in different forms and flavours to suit everyone interested in promoting long-term oral and dental health. Different products appeal to different users; for example, the Xylimax novelty full xylitol mints with refreshing tastes of Fresh lemon and Peppermint are packed in a convenient small zipper bag, hence easily fitting into a pocket or bag, handy for those on the move and looking for a refreshment at any point of the day. The fruity and mild taste of the Xylimax Moomin pastilles make, on the other hand, the products a suitable alternative for children.

All Xylimax products are gluten free. Even though oats might contain traces of gluten, once xylitol is produced, it does not contain traces of gluten.

Fazer Xylimax products sweetened with Fazer Xylitol will be available in stores in autumn 2023.
