Fazer to begin pilot sales of unique grain-based Fazer Taste the Future candy tablets with no cocoa

Fazer actively monitors shifting consumer trends and requirements and drives the development of the food industry. Introducing innovative and sustainable food solutions is one of Fazer’s priorities, and to this end, Fazer launches a unique vegan candy tablet, Taste the Future, produced without cocoa. The novelty candy tablet is produced with malted Finnish grain and comes in two different flavours. It will be available as limited edition at selected Fazer Retail outlets from 16 May 2023. The exciting innovation is a part of Fazer’s agenda for developing the future of chocolate.

Consumers are increasingly aware of the impact of food on both well-being and the environment and are demanding companies to provide solutions for sustainable lifestyles. Fazer’s high-quality and tasty range of vegan candies caters to the increasing demand of confectionery that do good for both the planet and well-being, and now the company introduces a delicious addition to its offering.

The new unique innovation, Fazer Taste the Future tablet, was created by carefully analysing the aroma profiles of different Finnish grains and pairing them with other plant-based ingredients. The flavour of malted rye is created by gently roasting it to brown. This creates a deep, roasty and bitter flavour that is often compared to cocoa. The distinctive flavour profile is complemented by vegetable fat, resulting in an enjoyable candy tablet that melts in the mouth.

Fazer’s novelty comes in two flavours – blueberry and salted caramel. In line with Fazer’s commitment to remove palm oil from all its confectionery and biscuit products by the end of 2024, the candy tablet is also palm oil free.

Fazer transforms innovations into tasty and sustainable products

“Sustainability is an important driver for our innovativeness. In addition to our popular plant-based Fazer Oat Choco tablets, we want to introduce new options. Our talented chocolate scientists managed to develop a unique delicious solution, which uses locally produced rye to replace cocoa in the candy tablet. Rye is a much-loved grain in the Nordic countries, its full and rich taste flavour profile being perfect for this development project”, says Annika Porr, Senior Manager at Fazer Confectionery’s Forward Lab.

Grains, oats and rye, for both tablets come from the Lahti region, Finland.

Fazer Cafés and Gateau stores perfect platforms for pilot sales

“The world is rapidly changing and it is increasingly difficult to predict consumer behaviour and requirements. To be able to keep up the pace with changing consumer needs, direct consumer feedback is very valuable. We meet thousands of consumers every day in our Gateau stores and cafés. These consumer contacts offer us a perfect platform for pilot sales”, says Robert Engman, VP of Commercial at Fazer Confectionery in Sweden.

The limited edition of both Taste the Future flavours will be available at Fazer Café Kluuvikatu 3, in Helsinki and at Gateau stores in Sturegallerian Stockholm and Södra Förstadsgatan in Malmö from 16 May. During the pilot sales, Fazer will collect consumer feedback to develop the product further.

Taste the Future contributes to Fazer’s alternative cocoa sourcing project

The new Taste the Future tablet is tightly linked to Fazer’s strategy to position itself as an innovative forerunner. Although Fazer, in accordance with its sustainability ambitions, is committed to combating climate change, there is also a need to explore alternative sources for sustainable cocoa.

“Fazer’s foremost priority is to ensure the sustainable management of cocoa sourcing by securing profitable farming and improving cocoa community well-being. However, as climate change threatens the traditional cocoa growing areas, there is a need to explore alternative materials for sustainable cocoa“, says Heli Anttila, VP of New Product Development at Fazer Confectionery.

Fazer has already, in partnership with VTT, received the first successful results of cell-cultured cocoa, which is part of Fazer’s exploration of alternative cocoa sources. Even though the use of cell-cultured cocoa is still far in the future, for Fazer, the time to fearlessly explore its possibilities is now.
