Fazer has supported SOS Children’s Village’s “Grandma and Grandad’s house” (Mummun ja vaarin tupa) since 2022. The activities focus on daily family life of families with children, and within the framework, voluntary seniors have provided support for families in need of help by joining together to cook and play. Fazer is one of SOS Children’s Villages’ long-term business partners – the cooperation has continued for more than 50 years.

The purpose of the Mummun ja vaarin tupa operations is to bring together, at an early stage, senior volunteers and families in need of help. The structured activities are targeted at families who lack extensive support networks. The activities include cooking together, playing, and spending time with the children. Volunteers ensure that the time spent together gives the parents a moment to catch their breath, meet other adults, and to eat together.

According to the feedback received, families with children feel that the activities have brought a lot of joy and relief to their everyday lives. For many, eating together is one of the highlights of the day.

“SOS Children's Village's Mummun ja vaarin tupa activities combine values that are important to us, that is food experiences and the well-being of children and young people. This cooperation concretises the significance of food as a source of well-being and care. Shared meals can have a big impact on a child's life. It also matters that the child gets the attention of a genuinely present adult," says Liisa Eerola, Communications Director responsible for Group partnerships at Fazer.

More than 100 volunteer grandmothers and grandfathers are involved in the Mummun ja vaarin tupa operations, among them employees who have retired from Fazer. Based on the feedback received, many volunteers are happy about the encounters between children and adults and feel that their contribution is appreciated and that they are a valuable part of a community.

During 2024, there have already been 562 gatherings around playing together and enjoying good food. The Mummun ja vaarin tupa activities and the joint events have attracted 12,500 visitors, of whom more than 6,700 have been children.

Fazer's support allows more families with children to join the activities

"During this year, more than 600 families have visited the Mummun ja Vaarin tupa and 1100 children have been met. Every child is entitled to sufficient and nutritious food. Fazer's support has enabled SOS Children's Village's Mummun ja vaarin tupa activities to be established and expanded all over Finland. We have been able to bring more families with children as well as senior volunteers within the scope of our activities," says Piritta Minkkinen, Project Manager at SOS Children's Villages. "We are happy that the cooperation with such a committed partner as Fazer continues. We hope their example inspires other companies to support children and young people, especially as Christmas approaches.”

The operations are currently running in Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa, as well as in Tampere, Kaarina, Raisio, Turku, Joensuu, Kuopio and Oulu. Five new premises were opened in 2024 and now there are a total of 18. The target for 2025 is to open more premises and to increase the number of visitors to 17,715.

Fazer and SOS Children's Villages have extended their agreement for three years.
