This year, the Fazer Experience Visitor Centre awaits its millionth visitor – the renewed exhibition evokes thoughts about the well-being of people and the environment
Fazer is accelerating its transformation to a modern and responsible food experience company, and this development is reflected in the renewed exhibition at the Fazer Experience Visitor Centre. In this multimedia exhibition, the visitors can experience Fazer with all their senses, think about their personal relationship with food, and take a peek at the exciting future of food. This spring, the millionth visitor will enter the Visitor Centre, opened in 2016.
The Fazer Experience Visitor Centre is a unique venue in Finland, and the memorable exhibition describes the growth of the Finnish food company into a house of many strong brands, while simultaneously telling the history of Finnish food. The exhibition is a cross-section of the company established in 1891, its people, the production of its beloved products and the excellent quality that has become the company’s trademark. The exhibition has now been revamped and updated to welcome the consumers of the 2020s.
“The exhibition at the Visitor Centre reflects the transition that is taking place at Fazer and the entire food industry. We are challenged by consumers’ unique tastes, brand awareness and food companies’ responsibility to combat climate change. In addition, the threats posed by climate change, such as global warming and the state of the Baltic Sea, are drawing ever closer and cause concern particularly among young people. Eating habits are changing, and for us, food is the solution,” says Joséphine Mickwitz, Head of Communications and Sustainability at Fazer.
Revamped exhibition encourages visitors to explore the consequences of their actions
At the Visitor Centre’s exhibition, you can experience all that food is, how it is made, how it tastes and smells, and the thoughts and feelings it prompts in all of us. Using concrete examples, the exhibition describes the origins and making of food and makes the visitors think about their relationship with food and the sustainability of the food choices they make.
“In addition to the history of our company, the revamped exhibition at the Fazer Experience Visitor Centre pays homage to our tasty products and brands. But above all, it is a skilfully designed collection that showcases our daily work to promote sustainability using impressive visual elements and artworks,” continues Joséphine Mickwitz.
Earth 2030 creates understanding for the uniqueness of life
Fazer has been receiving visitors for more than 60 years, and its popularity has grown continuously since the new Visitor Centre opened in the autumn of 2016. The millionth visitor is expected in the spring of 2022.
The exhibition’s new pieces, such as Earth 2030, draw a concrete picture of the limits of our planet and discuss Fazer’s sustainability efforts as part of the value chain. A cocoa forest takes the visitor to the colourful nature of the Ivory Coast and tells the story of a farming family growing cocoa for Fazer.
A green herb wall, a hydroponic water circulation system, helps us understand how to reduce our carbon footprint. You can use binoculars to peek at how our favourite products are made, and our farming game provides an insight into what regenerative farming means in practice, and what today’s farmers have to consider in their work.
A 180-degree video brings oat, the Nordic gold, and its growing season into the visitors’ view. Various practical examples demonstrate how oat side streams such as oat hulls are used for making xylitol and bread packaging materials.
“The exhibition still features the forever favourites, such as the tropical indoor garden, the Brainhow® piece, Food Buddy who teaches a healthy plate model and the Mignon bunny made of empty eggshells,” says Anu Kokko, director of the Visitor Centre. “Nearly half the guided tour participants are schoolchildren and students. Fazer is a classic school trip destination that leaves fond memories. We want to offer food for thought and feed the hunger for knowledge.”
The awarded Fazer Experience Visitor Centre is a handiwork showcase
The Visitor Centre, which is known as an architectural landmark of Vaarala in Vantaa and as a hotspot for international visitors, opened in October 2016. The Fazer Experience Visitor Centre consists of an exhibition, a Fazer Café, a shop, meeting services, and various events. The Visitor Centre has been awarded the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for four years in a row.
A substantial part of the exhibition was revamped in the renewal project which started in November 2021. Now the exhibition has been reopened, providing an even more immersive experience.
The renewal was designed by Tuuli and Kivi Sotamaa of Ateljé Sotamaa – who were also responsible for the original exhibition – in collaboration with Fazer employees. Their vision was realised by dozens of masters of their respective crafts, from audiovisual design to glassblowing and from carpentry to musical composition.
