Passenger load factor declined in February year-on-year due to coronavirus; traffic figures negative mainly in Asia

In February, Finnair carried 1,035,000 passengers which is 4.0% more than in the corresponding period of 2019. The overall capacity measured in Available Seat Kilometres (ASK) increased in February by 2.9%. Finnair's traffic measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPKs) decreased by 1.7%. The leap day had a growth contribution of some 3 per cent to passengers, ASK and RPK, as there was an additional day in February compared to 2019. The Passenger Load Factor (PLF) decreased year-on-year by 3.6% points to 76.1%.

The ASK decline in Asian traffic was 7.1%, due to coronavirus related route and frequency cancellations. The North Atlantic capacity increased by 33.6% following the opening of new Los Angeles route in March 2019.

In European traffic, the ASKs were up by 11.4%. The growth derived from additional seating capacity in some of the existing narrow-body aircraft and the changes in route network. The added capacity was directed especially to London. The ASKs in domestic traffic increased by 2.2%.

RPKs decreased in Asian traffic by 13.3%, but increased in North Atlantic traffic by 32.3%, in European traffic by 8.3% and in domestic traffic by 6.9%. The PLF was 78.9% in Asian traffic, 81.2% in North Atlantic traffic, 73.5% in European traffic and 64.9% in domestic traffic.

Passenger numbers decreased in Asian traffic by 14.8%, but increased in North Atlantic traffic by 32.1%, in European traffic by 8.9% and in domestic traffic by 4.9%.

Available scheduled cargo tonne kilometres decreased by 2.3% year-on-year and revenue scheduled cargo tonne kilometres decreased by 13.4%, both mainly due to coronavirus impact. Overall global uncertainty in world trade added with the coronavirus impact continue to press global air freight market and were especially visible in Finnair’s cargo markets in Asia.

In February, 86.1% of all Finnair flights arrived on schedule (74.4%).

Traffic statistics for March 2020 will be published on Tuesday 7 April 2020.
