Finnair Traffic Performance in July 2018

All-time high Passenger volume – almost 1.3 million passengers in July

In July, Finnair carried 1,287,800 passengers, 15.2% more than in the corresponding period of 2017. The number of passengers grew in Asian traffic 9.0%, European traffic 15.1%, North America traffic 17.5% and domestic traffic 29.2%.

Finnair's overall capacity measured in Available Seat Kilometres (ASK) increased in July by 14.1% year-on-year. Finnair's traffic measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPKs) grew by 11.8%. The high ASK growth rate was reflected in the Passenger Load Factor (PLF), which decreased year-on-year by 1.9 points to 88.4%.

In July 47% of Finnair's ASKs were in Asian traffic, 43% on European routes and the rest in North American and domestic traffic. Finnair’s long-haul capacity has been increased by the A350 aircraft with enlarged capacity, which have been introduced after the reference period. The ASK growth in Asian traffic was 10.7% and was mainly directed at frequency additions to Tokyo and Bangkok and to the new route opening to Nanjing. Also, the added seat capacity in the newer long-haul aircrafts had a positive impact. In North American traffic ASKs increased by 13.7%, mostly due to additional frequencies to Chicago and two additional flights to San Francisco.

The 17.7% ASK growth in European traffic derived from the increase in the narrow-body fleet size year-on-year and the additional seating capacity added to some of the existing narrow-body aircraft. Capacity growth was directed at added frequencies to several destinations, especially to Tallinn, Bergen, Berlin, Gdansk, St Petersburg and Moscow. Also, flights to new destinations Stuttgart, Lisbon and Minsk had a positive effect. ASK growth in domestic traffic increased by 24.2% mainly caused by Oulu airport, which was closed during the corresponding month due to a runway renovation. On the other hand, the domestic growth was slowed down due Tampere airport, which was partly closed during July.

RPKs grew by 8.4% in Asian traffic, 14.2% in European traffic, 17.8% in North American traffic and 27.5% in domestic traffic. The PLF was 90.7% in Asian traffic, 85.8% in European traffic, 93.9% in North American traffic, and 68.8% in domestic traffic. The PLF in total traffic decreased by 1.9 points to 88.4%.

Available Scheduled Cargo Tonne Kilometres increased by 12.8% year-on-year. Revenue Scheduled Cargo Tonne Kilometres increased by 11.2% mostly driven by the positive cargo market development to Japan. Finnair’s total cargo capacity includes three weekly freighter flights between Helsinki and Brussels, operated by DHL. Cargo flight volumes decreased from the comparison period when Finnair rented cargo space from Japan Airlines.

In July 77.4% of all Finnair flights arrived on schedule (86.7).

Traffic statistics for August 2018 will be published on Friday, 7 September 2018.
