Speed Group to start transporting Gasum’s gas containers
Gasum is entering into gas container transport cooperation with Speed Group Ltd. With a track record of more than 20 years of container transport, Speed was selected to partner with Gasum thanks to its expertise and special equipment.
Speed is a company specializing in container transport that shares the same objective as Gasum – promoting development towards a carbon-neutral future. This can be seen in many ways in the operations of this forerunner in the transport sector.
In 2016, Speed introduced an LNG-fueled Volvo truck to its fleet operating from Helsinki’s Vuosaari Harbor. For more than five years now, the company has also participated in the Eco-Truck trial where large-capacity modular combination vehicles are operated under a special permit granted by the Finnish Transport Safety agency (Trafi). The trial has resulted in carbon dioxide emissions having been cut by up to 40%.
Lighter containers ensure minimized emissions
Gasum has opened a new gas filling station in conjunction with the IKEA store in Espoo, Finland, in 2018. The next new Finnish location for vehicles to fill up on gas is Salo as Gasum will open a gas filling station at the Piihovi ABC station in summer 2018. During 2017, Gasum expanded its filling station network by five new gas filling stations.
Containers enable gas filling stations to be constructed also in areas outside the actual gas pipeline network. An example of this is the station opened in Tiilimäki, Pori, in 2017, which has received its gas in containers right from the start.
To increase transport efficiency, Gasum is introducing new, lighter gas containers. The new containers are made from a light material, which enables the transport of more containers without exceeding the weight limit in effect on Finland’s roads for the transport of hazardous substances. The new containers will be delivered to Gasum by the Norwegian UMOE Advanced Composites AS.
”Cooperation with Speed enables more efficient gas container transport for us. Our new lighter containers make sure we will be able to maximize the amount of gas transported in each delivery to our filling stations. This increases our operational efficiency and at the same time reduces emissions from container transport,” says Ari Suomilammi, Director, Biogas Production and Sourcing, from Gasum.
