Hemsö has improved its results considerably in this year’s Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) index and been named Global Sector Leader in Development Health Care.

The results of the 2021 edition of GRESB were presented in October. The index is used by investors to assess opportunities, risks and improvements that need to be made to meet the transition requirements of the built environment sector. In the Standing Investment category, Hemsö was awarded a score of 83 out of a possible 100. In the Development category, the company achieved a score of 90 out of 100. Stakeholder engagement, sustainable materials and risk analysis are some of the areas where Hemsö scored highly.

“The distinction represents strong confirmation of our sustainability work when it comes to the planning and development of new buildings,” says Nils Styf, CEO of Hemsö and continues: “We are happy that our continuous work with the sustainable development of the existing portfolio of older properties is also reflected in the results of this year’s GRESB. At the same time, we note that interest in sustainability issues is increasing among different stakeholders, not least in terms of climate aspects. This is an area that Hemsö is particularly focused on at this time. We have adopted a climate strategy with the target of achieving 100 per cent non-fossil energy use and net-zero CO₂ emissions for the existing portfolio by 2035 and are now investing in considerably reducing emissions in the construction phase.”

More than 1,500 real estate companies and funds with a total of 117,000 properties across 66 countries took part in this year’s survey. The survey covers such aspects as governance, sustainability reporting, energy, climate and  environmentally certified buildings, areas that Hemsö has focused on for some time.
