Danske Bank extends lease with Hufvudstaden to 2035
Danske Bank is extending its lease agreement with Hufvudstaden, which will see the bank remain at its iconic 1930s site at Norrmalmstorg 1 in Stockholm. The premises, amounting to approximately 9,800 square metres, will also be modernised to reflect the bank’s future needs and ways of working. The renovation work will have a strong focus on sustainability.
Danske Bank has had its Sweden headquarters at Norrmalmstorg 1 since the beginning of 2004, and with the extension of the lease will continue to conduct business in modern premises at a classic address.
“As a bank, a central location is extremely important to us to be able to attract and retain talent and to maximise convenience for customers who visit us for meetings and events. In conjunction with the extension of the Norrmalmstorg contract, the premises are being modernised to meet the needs of the workplace of the future. The fact that we’re extending the agreement to 2035 is also a clear signal that Danske Bank is set to grow in the Swedish market,” says Johanna Norberg, CEO Danske Bank Sverige.
The Packarhuset 4 property, which was known as Citypalatset for many years, was completed in 1932 and commissioned by banker Torsten Kreuger to house Sydsvenska bank. The architect was Ivar Tengbom and the building is a prime example of early Swedish functionalism. This is especially visible in the interior of the building, where Tengbom created a flexible, load-bearing steel structure, an early example of the approach. This built-in flexibility has enabled tenants to adapt the building over the years and thereby reduce environmental impact.
“We’re delighted that Danske Bank has chosen to extend its lease for the classic bank premises at Norrmalmstorg 1 in Bibliotekstan. And it’s especially pleasing that we also have a shared view on how we can update the premises sustainably,” says Frida Wijkström, Business Area Director Stockholm, Hufvudstaden.
