Champagne corks are popping at Blackpool Zoo as the award winning attraction celebrated the busiest day in its 38 year history. More than 4000 visitors flocked through the gates on the last Bank Holiday Monday of 2010, smashing forecasts for August despite 42 per cent above average rainfall for the month. Jude Rothwell, Marketing and PR Coordinator at Blackpool Zoo, said: “We were over the moon when it was confirmed that Monday was our busiest day ever and staff worked very hard to make sure everyone got a parking space and had a day to remember. “We had seen a gradual build up in numbers over the last week as the weather started to improve from previous wet and windy conditions so we were expecting a busy Bank Holiday. “There have been lots of monumental and first time births at the zoo this year and people were queuing up to see our new arrivals. “During the course of 2010 we have also completed several investment programmes to rejuvenate the Zoo including the UK’s biggest sea lion pool, the aardvark outdoor area and the wallaby walkabout. “As the sun continues to shine families are making the most of the end of the summer holidays and we have been very busy since the Bank Holiday too. “With lots of exciting announcements, arrivals, events and more enclosure revamps expected in the very near future we are looking forward to building on our success.” The news comes in the same year that the zoo celebrated a hat trick of awards successes after being crowned Tourism Business of the Year in the Lancashire BIBAs (Be Inspired Business Awards), Visitor Attraction of the Year at the Blackpool Tourism Awards and Large Visitor Attraction of the Year’ at the Lancashire and Blackpool Tourism Awards 2010/1. Blackpool Zoo will now represent Lancashire and Blackpool at the England North West Tourism Awards later this year. -ends- Picture show: Blackpool Zoo’s Lemurs celebrate the success.
