BLACKPOOL ZOO SCOOPS TOP BIAZA AWARD

Blackpool Zoo scooped one of the top accolades from the zoo world at the prestigious British & Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) awards 2010. Its unique Zoo Keeper Academy was named Best Education Project in the schools and educational establishments category, beating off stiff competition from attractions across the UK. The 10 day course, which is the brainchild of Blackpool Zoo’s Head of Education, Sarah Thomas, is aimed at young people aged 15-17 who wish to pursue a career working with animals. THOMAS MAYHEW IS OFFICIALLY A BOOKWORM

Animal mad Thomas Mayhew from Hyde is officially a bookworm! The six-year-old has been crowned the winner of Blackpool Zoo’s monthly bookworm competition, which was launched on World Book Day this year. On a recent family visit to the zoo, Thomas, who attends Flowery Field Primary School, entered the competition along with his brothers Matthew, aged fifteen and Dominic, aged nine. TIME’S RUNNING OUT FOR RED PANDA CUB SIGHTINGS AT BLACKPOOL

Sightings of Blackpool Zoo’s first ever baby red panda have been very rare and time is running out to get a last, or indeed, first look! Keepers recently confirmed that the cub, nicknamed Scarlett after the infamous Pimpernel, is a girl, which means she will leave the zoo to join another collection to continue the breeding programme for the vulnerable species. The date of her move and final location are yet to be confirmed but her short time at Blackpool has provided visitors and staff alike with hours of fun trying to spot her peeping out of the nesting box in her enclosure. BUSIEST DAY IN BLACKPOOL ZOO’S HISTORY ANNOUNCED

Champagne corks are popping at Blackpool Zoo as the award winning attraction celebrated the busiest day in its 38 year history. More than 4000 visitors flocked through the gates on the last Bank Holiday Monday of 2010, smashing forecasts for August despite 42 per cent above average rainfall for the month. WORLD’S SMALLEST OTTERS BORN IN BLACKPOOL

Four of the world’s smallest otters have been born and successfully reared at Blackpool Zoo for the first time in its 38 year history. The cute quartet of Oriental Small Clawed otters are now out and about after spending their first two months being cared for in the holt by their mother. When they are born, they weigh around 50g, are toothless, practically immobile and their eyes are still closed. REALLY WILD SUMMER AT BLACKPOOL ZOO

Blackpool Zoo is gearing up for a really wild summer following the announcement of a whole host of amazing animal births and the launch of lots of new attractions. Britain’s biggest and best sea lion pool burst into action at the end of May and, after a complete overall, it now has its very own beach area and extended 250 seat amphitheatre. ICG PR sealed more national TV coverage for client Blackpool Zoo, when GMTV chose its idea for the show’s annual April Fools joke.A spoof recruitment drive at the zoo, for giraffe keepers that are over 6ft 2inches tall, was devised and put to the programme, who loved it! The wind and rain didn’t dampen spirits and an afternoon’s filming in Giraffe Heights with presenter Matt Arnold was all it took to fool the nation. Lynne’s hair to go all tigertastic…….Blackpool Zoo regular, Lynne Gorrie, has fallen head over heals in love with Zambar the new Amur Tiger and is having her hair styled just like his to help save his relatives across the world. CALIFORNIA DREAMING FOR BLACKPOOL’S SEALIONS

Britain’s biggest sealion enclosure will burst into action at Blackpool Zoo this year following a £500,000 investment. A complete overhaul of the pool and its surround began last year and it will reopen with its own beach and amphitheatre in time for Easter. Work is being carried out by Zootech, whose technical team of animal enclosure experts masterminded the celebrated penguin pool project along with zoo staff and directors in 2009. TIGER ROARS IN FOR CHINESE NEW YEAR

Watch out……Watch out…..there’s a tiger about!Half term will see Blackpool Zoo mark the Chinese Year of the Tiger with the arrival of Zambar, a male Amur Tiger. Born at Marwell Zoo in March 2004, he will arrive in early February to take up residence in his own paddock and will be joined by a female later in the year. From Sunday 14th through to Saturday 20th February the zoo will celebrating Zambar’s arrival by hosting a tiger themed week with talks, scheduled feeds, a tiger trail, a name that tiger competition and a 21st Century Tiger collage workshop.
