HEART-RENDING GORILLA PHOTOGRAPH WINS TWO NATIONAL AWARDS

A heart-rending photograph capturing an intimate moment between a new born baby gorilla and her mother at Blackpool Zoo has scooped two top awards at the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquarium (BIAZA) awards 2010. It was taken by regular zoo visitor Sharon Bentley, who has had no photography training, just days after Meisie the Western Lowland gorilla was born in May this year. Blackpool Zoo entered the picture, which Sharon entitled ‘Safe’ into the 2010 BIAZA photography competition category ‘Life in a BIAZA Collection’. BABY FLAMINGO THINKS IT IS A ZOO KEEPER!!!

The youngest member of Blackpool Zoo’s flamingo flock thinks it is a zoo keeper! Shortly after hatching on July 18th this year, the fluffy flamingo ‘imprinted’ on the first living creature it saw - namely James Mulvany , Blackpool Zoo’s Senior Bird and Reptile Keeper. When three flamingo eggs were laid earlier in the year keepers took the decision to incubate and hand rear the chicks after previous breeding attempts ended in eggs being stolen by seagulls that are prevalent in the seaside resort. TIME’S RUNNING OUT FOR RED PANDA CUB SIGHTINGS AT BLACKPOOL

Sightings of Blackpool Zoo’s first ever baby red panda have been very rare and time is running out to get a last, or indeed, first look! Keepers recently confirmed that the cub, nicknamed Scarlett after the infamous Pimpernel, is a girl, which means she will leave the zoo to join another collection to continue the breeding programme for the vulnerable species. The date of her move and final location are yet to be confirmed but her short time at Blackpool has provided visitors and staff alike with hours of fun trying to spot her peeping out of the nesting box in her enclosure. BUSIEST DAY IN BLACKPOOL ZOO’S HISTORY ANNOUNCED

Champagne corks are popping at Blackpool Zoo as the award winning attraction celebrated the busiest day in its 38 year history. More than 4000 visitors flocked through the gates on the last Bank Holiday Monday of 2010, smashing forecasts for August despite 42 per cent above average rainfall for the month. WORLD’S SMALLEST OTTERS BORN IN BLACKPOOL

Four of the world’s smallest otters have been born and successfully reared at Blackpool Zoo for the first time in its 38 year history. The cute quartet of Oriental Small Clawed otters are now out and about after spending their first two months being cared for in the holt by their mother. When they are born, they weigh around 50g, are toothless, practically immobile and their eyes are still closed. ZOO KEEPERS LEND A HAND TO FEATHERED FRIEND

Keepers at Blackpool Zoo are really getting to grips with the latest feathery arrival. A baby Demoiselle Crane, which hatched in May, is being hand reared after he was removed from his parents’ nest in the interest of his well-being. Specialist keepers are feeding him on crane pellets, chopped fish, fruit, vegetables and insects, a diet which mirrors that of his traditional diet in his native Asia. TELEGRAPH POLES WANTED FOR GORILLA CLIMBING FRAME!

Blackpool Zoo appeals to the nationBlackpool Zoo is appealing to the nation for telegraph pole poles or tall trees, which will help to build a climbing frame for gorillas. Since the birth of the zoos first ever Western Lowland Gorilla in May the gorillas have not been allowed to have access to part of their outdoor area as the surrounding moat would be too dangerous for the infant. The new climbing frame will entertain the band of gorillas and provide additional enrichment for the baby girl, who is just starting to explore her surroundings. REALLY WILD SUMMER AT BLACKPOOL ZOO

Blackpool Zoo is gearing up for a really wild summer following the announcement of a whole host of amazing animal births and the launch of lots of new attractions. LEMUR BABY BOOM AT BLACKPOOL ZOO

…Meet the new babies this Bank Holiday…One of Blackpool Zoo’s best loved animal troops has had six new additions in April, bringing the total number of Ring-Tailed Lemurs at the award winning attraction to over 30. Native to the African Island of Madagascar, the species is endangered in the wild, but they have been successfully bred several times at the zoo. The six babies are currently sticking close to their mothers in the small primate house and will be out with the rest of the intrepid troop of ring-tailed rascals in Lemur Wood later in the year.
