ZOO KEEPERS LEND A HAND TO FEATHERED FRIEND

Keepers at Blackpool Zoo are really getting to grips with the latest feathery arrival. A baby Demoiselle Crane, which hatched in May, is being hand reared after he was removed from his parents’ nest in the interest of his well-being. Specialist keepers are feeding him on crane pellets, chopped fish, fruit, vegetables and insects, a diet which mirrors that of his traditional diet in his native Asia. REALLY WILD SUMMER AT BLACKPOOL ZOO

Blackpool Zoo is gearing up for a really wild summer following the announcement of a whole host of amazing animal births and the launch of lots of new attractions. Britain’s biggest and best sea lion pool burst into action at the end of May and, after a complete overall, it now has its very own beach area and extended 250 seat amphitheatre. Stylish mock rock has replaced the old concrete background and the cascading waterfalls are proving very popular with the sea lions. Blackpool International’s Firefighters Take on the Three Peaks Challenge!

Firefighters from Blackpool International are set to scale the UK’s three highest mountains in just 24 hours to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.Blackpool International’s White Watch are tackling Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Mount Snowdon starting on May 18th. Firefighter Joe Reidy enlisted his crew to start training for the renowned Three Peaks Challenge after hearing about Lisa Taylor, a close family friend, and her determination to increase awareness of the most common type of cancer in the UK. So far Lisa has raised more than £1000 after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009.

LEMUR BABY BOOM AT BLACKPOOL ZOO

…Meet the new babies this Bank Holiday…One of Blackpool Zoo’s best loved animal troops has had six new additions in April, bringing the total number of Ring-Tailed Lemurs at the award winning attraction to over 30. Native to the African Island of Madagascar, the species is endangered in the wild, but they have been successfully bred several times at the zoo. The six babies are currently sticking close to their mothers in the small primate house and will be out with the rest of the intrepid troop of ring-tailed rascals in Lemur Wood later in the year. Look how they have grown…The first lion cubs to be born at Blackpool Zoo for more than 25 years will celebrate turning one on Friday 9th of April. Like all lion cubs, Luna, Kimya and Nikita were born helpless and blind but, with the care of their mother, Gillian, they have positively flourished at the zoo. Lynne’s hair to go all tigertastic…….Blackpool Zoo regular, Lynne Gorrie, has fallen head over heals in love with Zambar the new Amur Tiger and is having her hair styled just like his to help save his relatives across the world.
