Compression springs in cleaning system for crankcase gases

Report this content

In the new generation of exhaust emission control system for commercial vehicles, compression springs from Stece, part of the Lesjöfors Group, are crucial for the function. Several of the world-leading truck and engine brands are using the innovative Alfdex separator.

The Alfdex oil mist separator gives an ultimate solution for the continuous, ultra-efficient cleaning of crankcase gases in modern diesel engines. The separator makes sure that the oil and soot particles are removed from the gas. The Alfdex oil mist separator meets the tougher environmental legislation from the Euro 5 regulation. Several of the worlds’ leading truck and engine brands have opted for the Alfdex system. Among them are e.g. Scania, Volvo, Renault, Mack, Mercedes-Benz, Freightliner, Western Star, Sterling Trucks and Navistar.

Fruitful partnership
Alfdex is a joint-venture between Alfa Laval and Haldex. Alfa Laval is known world-wide for the unique knowledge of centrifugal separation, mainly used in the dairy industry when cream is separated from milk. Now those skills are used and developed in the heavy vehicle industry. Haldex has a strong position as a supplier of proprietary vehicle technology solutions to the global vehicle industry.

Compression springs developed in close cooperation
Stece Fjädrar, part of the Lesjöfors Group, was chosen to deliver three kinds of compression springs to the Alfdex separator. The development process was long to design the perfectly adapted compression springs. Engineers from both Stece and Alfdex have worked in a close cooperation during the whole process.

- We are very pleased that we could assist Alfdex with our spring technology expertise in the development of the future´s exhaust emission control system, says Hans Mazetti, MD at Stece Fjädrar.

Huge business potential
The business deal amounts to about 600 000 SEK per year for Stece when production has reached its full scale. There is an enormous development potential in this field thanks to the increasingly tougher environmental legislation not only in Europe and USA, but also in China, the rest of Asia and other parts of the world. In just a few years, the production of separators is estimated to about half a million units per year.
