Triumph Park residential development creates sustainability history in Russia

The Triumph Park development in St Petersburg has become the first residential building in Russia to be awarded a design-stage BREEAM certificate and only the second project to be BREEAM certified in the country. Mott MacDonald was appointed by the Mirland Development Corporation to provide expert sustainability advice during design and post-construction.

The 37,000 sq m residential building will be made up of 510 apartments and will also feature ground-floor space for bank, office and retail opportunities. The low-energy building will feature energy efficient lifts, natural ventilation and will maximise the use of daylight within the apartments. It will also incorporate environmentally friendly building materials with high thermal performance, and over 95% of waste will be diverted from landfill.

Additionally, the development will provide residents with a dedicated shuttle transport service linking to the local metro station, while postal services will also be offered to compensate for the lack of a post office in the immediate neighbourhood.

Mott MacDonald has provided full BREEAM services and assessments on the project including energy modelling and daylight analyses, which helped achieve credits in the energy, health and wellbeing BREEAM certification sections.

Mott MacDonald’s project director Paul Friday said: “The Triumph Park project is the first instance where Mott MacDonald's offices in Moscow and Cambridge have collaborated successfully on a live BREEAM project, where design decisions were made with the targeted certification in mind. This certification is a great success for Mott MacDonald in Russia. We advised a new client about the BREEAM process and helped them create evidence schedules, identify what evidence is required as well as what form this evidence has to be produced in. The Triumph Park development is a perfect example of the sustainability drive Russia is currently experiencing.”

As well as being awarded BREEAM certification, the Triumph Park development has also been named winner of the most sustainable multi-residential complex category at the 2012 Green Awards, the first all-Russian competition on sustainable development and energy efficiency.

Construction has begun, with the first building scheduled to be commissioned in spring 2013. The whole development is due to be completed in 2019.
