Equal Pay Day in Germany

Report this content

Equal Pay Day marks the day up to which women statistically work without pay—the gender pay gap is narrowing very slowly.

GLASHÜTTE, MARCH, 2023. The formula is as follows: 365 days multiplied by the current statistical pay difference as a percentage. The result is the date of Equal Pay Day (EPD). While men are paid for their work starting from January 1, this is the day up to which women are statistically working for free. In 2023, this day falls on March 7, just as it did in 2022: In comparison to their male colleagues, women in Germany work 66 days without pay. Of course, this “date” differs from country to country and from year to year, depending on the current ratios.

The gender pay gap is especially wide in Germany: At 18%, the discrepancy between the genders stands at approximately 4% higher than the European average, with the country occupying the third to last place in Europe. The situation has improved only marginally over the years: EPD fell on March 7 in 2022, and it has moved forward by just 14 days in the last ten years; Equal Pay Day was on March 21 in 2013.

Equal Pay Day now takes place in 23 European countries: Belgium, France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden and Czechia all participate, among others. EPD, which was first launched by the European Commission in 2011, is also observed in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand.
