Peab builds top modern swimming pool facility in Kiruna
Peab has been commissioned to build a new swimming pool facility in the new Kiruna City Center. The customer is Kiruna Municipality through WeGroup EPCM Projekt and the contract is worth SEK 290 million.
The new facility, which will replace Kiruna’s existing swimming pool, will be two stories high for a total of 10,500 m2 and contain all of 14 pools. The pools will run from two 25 meter exercise pools to multi-pools that have height adjustable bottoms to play pools to family pools. The new swimming pool facility will also have a relax section with a lounge area, warm and cold pools and a so-called Augfuss sauna. For those particularly interested in playing there will be two waterslides, one of which will run outside the façade for quite a stretch. There will also be a restaurant on the ground floor.
Almost 40 percent of the facility is used for technology since energy efficiency is highly prioritized in the project. The project is investing in a new type of energy recycling system customized for pool facilities in which almost all the heat generated is recycled and reused. The ventilation system is also innovatively suited to buildings with pools with a direct exchange of ventilation air that chills the return air and humidifies supply air.
“We are very proud to contribute to developing the city of Kiruna with this new pool facility. It will offer everything any Kiruna resident who loves to swim could ask for. We have previously built the Town Hall and are now building the new Culture Center, and we are grateful that we have been entrusted by the municipality to continue to develop Kiruna,” says Susanne Hallberg, Region Manager Peab.
Peab has a great deal of experience in building pool facilities. As a result of the many pool facility projects Peab has an expert group on pool facility building that provides advice and experience exchanges to local project organizations that are going to build a pool facility.
Production of the swimming pool facility in Kiruna is the second stage of the project. In a previous stage Peab did the landscaping and groundwork.
The project is a traditional contract in partnering. Construction is planned to start in September 2020 and the first guests are expected to be able swim there in the autumn of 2022.
The project will be order registered in the second quarter 2020.
