Peab has been commissioned to rebuild the lock canal in Södertälje. The customer is the Swedish Transport Administration and the contract is worth SEK 1.5 billion.

The lock canal in Södertälje is the largest Nordic commercial lock canal. Rebuilding the lock canal is part of the Lake Malar Project aimed at improving the maritime safety and accessibility of general shipping lanes through the Södertälje canal. Improving the infrastructure for shipping on Lake Malar can reduce the pressure on the heavily trafficked roadways and railroad. The new lock canal will therefore also generate more sustainable and effective freight transports.

The entire lock canal will be rebuilt and Sluss Bridge will be replaced with a new openable bridge. The current lock gates will be exchanged for new ones that allow for a broader, longer canal. The project also includes building new premises for operating the locks as well as new roads alongside the canal.

“As local community builders it’s exciting to rebuild and improve the lock canal in Södertälje. Building new locks while the old ones are still in use is complicated and requires handling both the old constructions and new mobile ones along with all the different technology. The work requires good planning. This is definitely a project where Peab’s broad expertise will be put to good use,” says Carl Johan Söderberg, Region Manager Peab.

The project is a turnkey contract and construction will begin in August 2022.

The project will be order registered in the second quarter 2022.
