Renewables –  systems and storage

The workshop will focus on potential scientific breakthroughs in renewable energy conversion technologies, in energy storage and in energy systems over the period to 2050 and beyond

For some of these technologies, which provide intermittent electrical power (such as wind and photovoltaic solar power), problems of electrical system balance and need for storage can be significant. Renewables also include the direct conversion of sunlight into solar fuels where storage is part of the solution. But many forms of renewable energy are found, and breakthroughs can be arriving from many sectors.

Organizer is the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) through the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The workshop is a part of the EASAC study of breakthroughs in sustainable energy supply and consumption by 2050, and outlook towards the end of the century. The aim of the study is to make an international scanning of possible developments in science in order to evaluate their potential to generate breakthroughs in low carbon energy technologies. EASAC has appointed the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences as the leading academy for the study.
