Social cognition and autism

Report this content

Key neuroscience and psychology experts will discuss recent views on the foundations of social cognition, and implications for theories for autism – a disorder of social communication.

Both theoretical and methodological developments have contributed to the advancement of knowledge in these areas during the last decades. For example, researchers can now address novel scientific questions using non-invasive technology in human infants and by manipulating brain activity experimentally in adults. In parallel, advancements in genetics have shed important new light on the contribution of biology to social cognition and socio-communicative impairments. As a result, we are now beginning to understand the mechanisms by which we come to understand the actions of other people, and whether these mechanisms are impaired in autism. Nevertheless, many “old” questions remain unanswered. It is the hope that the symposium will inspire young researchers in this field to approach both old and new questions in innovative ways in the future.
