Silverstone Auctions in gear for Race Retro Sale
A rare 1933 Talbot 110 Alpine Replica, estimated between £130,000 to £160,000, and a 1964 Ford Lotus Cortina FIA race car, estimated between £70,000 to £80,000 are among the first cars to be registered for Silverstone Auctions’ next event, the Race Retro and Classic Car Sale.
The auction will be one of the main attractions at the Race Retro International Historic Motorsport Show, Europe’s premier historic racing event, which takes place at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire, from 24thto 26thFebruary.
It is also the first time that Silverstone Auctions will hold a sale away from its traditional venue and spiritual home at Silverstone race circuit.
“Race Retro is one of Europe’s premier international shows for classic and racing cars and motorbikes, so we are delighted to play an integral role in the event,” explains Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions.
“The weekend will pay a special tribute to thirty years of the Porsche 956, the most successful Group C racing car of all time, whilst also celebrating sixty years of the Porsche marque in motorsport.
“Therefore, we expect many Porsche enthusiasts to take the opportunity of attending our auction. If past experience is anything to go by, bidding will be strong for any models that come under the hammer.”
Silverstone Auctions is no stranger to selling classic and racing Porsches. It recently sold both entries from the manufacturer at its recent Walter Hayes Sale, including a 1989 Porsche Club Sport for £51,700.
However, Porsche is by no means the only manufacturer being represented at the sale. Other classic road cars already entered into the auction include an original 1965 Austin Mini Cooper S ‘Twini’, estimated at between £20,000 - £25,000, a 1958 Jaguar XK150S Fixhead Coupe with only 690 miles since restoration, estimated at £35,000 - £40,000 and a 1948 Allard K1.
In keeping with the show’s racing heritage, the auction will also feature a number of period competition cars. The FIA Lotus Cortina, the first racing car to be registered for the auction, has a wealth of racing heritage and is undoubtedly one of the most competitive race Lotus Cortina’s in Europe. The car comes with genuine period racing history having competed in 1964 in the hands of Italian Giancarlo 'Micky' Giordano before being passed on to Sergio Piana in 1967 and Mario Fren the following year. Indeed, the car still has front running credentials as it demonstrated at this year’s Silverstone Classic and Dijon Classic races.
