SSAB's climate goals are approved by the Science Based Targets initiative
SSAB's targets for greenhouse gas emissions including carbon dioxide have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative. The approval means that the objective is scientifically based and in line with the Paris Agreement.
SSAB is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas (CO2e) emissions by 35 percent by 2032 (based on 2018 figures). The goal applies to both direct and indirect emissions (Scope 1 and 2) and is in line with the objective of keeping global warming well below 2°C. This goal has now been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative.
"By joining Science Based Targets, we are showing that our goal is based on the latest climate science. We hope that this will inspire and lead the way for other industries. Setting clear and transparent goals and closely following them up is an important success factor," says Christina Friborg, Executive Vice President and Head of Sustainability, SSAB.
SSAB's overall goal is to be fossil-free by 2045. SSAB's plan is to convert to a fossil-free steelmaking process based on the new hydrogen-based HYBRIT technology developed by SSAB together with LKAB and Vattenfall within the framework of the HYBRIT initiative. SSAB's ambition is to be the first to offer the market fossil-free steel as early as 2026, and then to convert all production sites to become fossil-free.

The initiative defines and promotes best practice in science-based objectives, provides support and guidance to reduce obstacles to adopting the objectives, and evaluates and approves the companies' objectives independently.
