IMOIIMAX Stena Impression named in Singapore
The IMOIIMAX Stena Impression, a 50,000 DWT MR chemical tanker, was named in Singapore today. The Stena Impression is owned by a joint venture of which Stena Bulk and Indonesian Golden Agri Resources (GAR) each own 50 percent. The Stena Impression is the first of ten vessels ordered by Stena Bulk for a total of USD 400 million with delivery to be completed by 2017. The vessels will be operated by Stena Weco and will trade within the company’s logistical systems, which now will include fleet of some 60 tankers. The IMOIIMAX tankers have been designed to transport both vegetable oils, chemicals as well as clean and dirty petroleum products.

A large number of international guests attended the naming ceremony in Singapore. The Stena Impression’s godmother was Jesslyne Widjaja, Director Corporate Strategy & Business Development, GAR. Her captain is Jacob Valiaveed. Tomorrow, the Stena Impression will begin her maiden voyage with a cargo of palm oil and is expected to reach her destination in the US in about two months.
“The IMOIIMAX tankers will be a significant addition to our successful collaboration with Golden Agri. At the same time, it is a further step in the development of our existing sophisticated trading system”, says Erik Hånell, CEO of Stena Bulk, in a comment.

The concept has been developed by Stena Teknik together with the Chinese shipyard Guangzhou. The tanker has 18 tanks of the same size, each with a capacity of 3,000 m3, which allows for greater cargo flexibility. A large number of innovative technical solutions have been implemented, which together, when sailing at service speed, result in 10-20% lower fuel consumption compared with other vessels of the same size.
“Flexibility and energy savings are key characteristics of the IMOIIMAX concept. The configuration of several small tanks provides for considerable flexibility in regards of cargo combination, something that fits very well within our existing global logistical systems. The fact that the concept, with its many innovative technical solutions, will result in energy savings is naturally a major advantage”, says Erik Hånell, CEO of Stena Bulk.

The remaining nine IMOIIMAX tankers are the Stena Image (owner: Concordia Maritime), the Stena Imperial (Stena Bulk and GAR), the Stena Important (Concordia Maritime), the Stena Imperative (Stena Bulk), the Stenaweco Impulse (Golden Stena Weco), the Stena Imagination (Stena Bulk and GAR), the Stena Immortal (Stena Bulk and GAR), the Stena Immaculate (Stena Bulk and GAR) and the Stena Impeccable (Stena Bulk and GAR).
Some of the technical solutions that will result in more energy efficient consumption and greater logistic flexibility:
- Main engine auto-tuning
- More efficient boiler with recovery from multiple heat sources
- Recovery of propeller energy loss
- Aerodynamic design of the accommodation and bridge
- All cargo tanks designed to carry any type of cargo the vessel can transport
- Effective tank-cleansing system
