The early beginnings of sport management: how the European Association for Sport Management contributed to sport becoming a serious academic pursuit
In 1993 sport management was not a serious field of academic study. The European Association for Sport Management (EASM) was born with the intention to operate between the sport manager and the sport management scholar in both theory and practice. In 2013 EASM is celebrating 20 years!
This is a big milestone for the Association and an article has been published in their journal, European Sport Management Quarterly taking a look back over the past 20 years: Twenty years of the European Association for Sport Management – the early beginnings.
This article details how EASM was created, the obstacles they had to overcome before officially becoming an association, including a copy of the original incorporation act certificate, and how other associations then followed.
Fast forward 20 years and EASM has grown its membership, developed its journal which now publishes 5 issues per year and is included in the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), and holds the largest and culturally most diverse sport management conference each year.
