TOMRA: Successful Bid for Network Operator Role in the New South Wales Container Deposit Scheme

The New South Wales (NSW) Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton has today, 29.07.2017, announced that TOMRA’s joint venture with Cleanaway (“TOMRA-Cleanaway”) has been appointed as the Network Operator for the State’s Container Deposit Scheme starting in December 2017. The Container Deposit Scheme will be a vital contribution to NSW’s litter volume reduction target of 40% by 2020. “This is the biggest initiative to tackle litter in the state’s history and it will make a massive difference to the amount of rubbish on our streets, parks and waterways right across NSW,” Environment Minister Upton said. “It will also provide a fundraising opportunity for schools, community and sporting groups, which share in millions of dollars every year in places, where similar schemes have been running for decades.”

TOMRA-Cleanaway has been awarded the Network Operator role across the whole of NSW. The scheme commencement date is from 1stof December 2017 with the majority of collection points operational and the rest up and running by the end of February 2018.

TOMRA has entered into a 50/50 Joint Venture with Cleanaway Waste Management Ltd. In this partnership TOMRA will provide technology, software and carry the investment for the technology provided. Cleanaway will provide logistics, sorting of collected material and act as broker for the related commodities.

There will be over 500 Collection Points across the state and more than half of these will be automated with two or four reverse vending machines. More than 800 RVMs will be installed in total. The contract awarded has a duration of 5 years with an option to extend for another 4 years.
