- the SLS Gravity 2022 3D printer withstands harsher environments, is easier to maintain, and is adapted for globalisation

Swedish 3D printer manufacturer Wematter makes advanced SLS technology available in a user-friendly hardware and software solution. The new version of Gravity 2022 is more robust than its predecessor and features increased repeatability and serviceability. The new Gravity is also designed for use in more types of climates and is developed to cope with printing in more materials that can withstand fire and electrostatic discharges.

Wematter Gravity is a product adapted for a rental system (product-as-a-service). This means that the hardware is purchased with a pre-made support system that includes service, support, and software licensing. This subscription service ensures the highest quality and guarantees the 3D prints’ performance.

The 2022 model of the Gravity SLS 3D printer introduces the ability to individually read each powder package. This innovation prevents inexperienced users from accidentally loading a 3D printer with the wrong powder in cases where multiple units producing with different materials are operating in the same room.

Since 2021, Wematter has moved from only providing direct sales to cooperating with dealers across the world. Wematter’s participation in international trade places more demands on its SLS systems, which are now being placed within varying climate and temperature conditions (from 0 °C to +40 °C). The printer now comes with individual cooling systems and improved component selection, which lets the 3D printer cope with the Nordic cold and Mediterranean heat and humidity.

"Due to global warming, Wematter is seeing climate change in the regions where we operate; we are seeing the ambient temperature around Gravity getting higher and higher. Customers who turn off their AC systems in the evenings and weekends to save on energy costs create changing ambient conditions around Wematter’s printers. As a result, Wematter has invested in more rugged technology," said Robert Kniola, founder and CEO of Wematter.

One of Wematter's values is sustainability: energy efficiency is important. In Gravity 2022, Wematter has replaced several key components to reduce the system’s power consumption during operation by 25%.

“Through the annual model changes, Wematter has the chance to highlight its products’ strengths after consulting with its customers. This year we have chosen to prioritise working time. Through its innovation, Wematter has eliminated one of the mandatory inspection steps between each SLS build job start. We have also introduced lighting in the chamber to simplify powder removal and taking out the 3D models”, continued Kniola.

For almost a year, Wematter has focused on improving the Gravity’s sensor technology to enable more materials. The Gravity 2022 SLS-3D printer is now equipped with a laser system that lets the user print with white, grey, or black materials from different material groups. This makes Gravity 2022 the most powerful, cost-effective, and complete multi-material SLS 3D printing solution developed by Wematter to date. The printer can use nine different materials and more materials are in development. The high temperature chamber allows the use of very specific and technical materials, which, together with the PA12, PA11, ESD, PP and TPU family, makes it one of the most versatile SLS machines in its niche.

As a consequence of the company's global market expansion, the need for efficient production is increasing. Wematter has redesigned its proprietary electronics to fit a much higher volume context. The re-design is also a way for the company to be less affected by the global semiconductor shortage. Several of our PCB boards have been redesigned. In addition, Gravity 2022 now has stainless steel throughout to withstand more of our customers' climates.

Summary

The Wematter Gravity 2022 SLS 3D printer builds on the Gravity 2021 model to include the following new features:

  • QR code scanning to individually register powder packs;
  • Individual cooling system for laser, optics and other hardware to cope with a wider temperature range of 0-40 degrees Celsius;
  • New more energy efficient laser projection system for lower energy consumption;
  • New pneumatic systems for greater power for new materials and lower energy consumption;
  • Eliminated one of the control steps between each run to save working time;
  • LED lighting in the chamber for better visibility;
  • Updated sensor technology to prepare for more materials;
  • Updated electronics for better producibility; and
  • Stainless steel throughout to cope with more environmental climates.
