Fully renovated Hamburger Börs in Turku to reopen

A comprehensive construction project that started in 2019 is now complete and Scandic Hamburger Börs will open on 1 November.
When the planning started roughly four years ago, building owner LähiTapiola, construction company YIT and hotel operator Scandic were first thinking about renovating the market-facing building. In the end, however, it was decided to demolish the old building and construct a new building in its place.
The hotel building, which was added to the old Börs in the 1970s, has now been demolished and replaced by a completely new hotel with architecture that pays tribute to the historic days of the Turku Market Square.
The hotel has 272 rooms. In addition to the hotel rooms, the new building includes restaurants, such as the Börs Katto bar and the Börs Pöheikkö terrace restaurant. In the future, the old Börs will include function and meeting rooms. The interior look was designed by Jaakko Puro. The architecture of the new hotel was created by the architect firm Schauman Arkkitehdit.
In many ways, the project was unique both in terms of design, construction and the end result. The old Börs, which was completed in 1885, seamlessly joins the new building stylistically integrated into the late 20th century environment of the Turku Market Square.
The challenging logistics of hotel construction
When it comes to construction projects, thorough logistical planning is always sensible but, in the case of Hamburger Börs, it was absolutely essential. Because of the location of the site in the heart of Turku, it was practically impossible to store any materials. Both new and existing digital tools were used to manage the material flows.
“If the logistics hadn't worked, the site would have been blocked in a matter of days. It would have consumed a lot of time and money and also affected the quality of the end result. We had to think outside the box because this was not a normal construction site with plenty of space to work in and store larger cargo loads," says Jyrki Rantapaju, the Site Manager of the Hamburger Börs construction site at YIT.
The building materials arrived at the site as precision deliveries and carefully calculated installation items, which were delivered as directly as possible to the installation point. A real-time logistics booking calendar made it possible to adjust the delivery times precisely.
The construction also took place during the COVID-19 pandemic. Movement restrictions made certain things difficult, although the fact that there was less traffic also benefited the site and its material flows.
More glorious than ever, Hamburger Börs is once again ready to create unforgettable memories for its guests.
