Restoration of the Sapsokoski and Arvajankoski rapids re-opens almost 100 km of routes for migratory fish
(UPM, Helsinki, 10 November 2022 at 14:30 EET) - Two sites chosen for restoration under UPM’s migratory fish programme have now been returned to their natural state. The restoration of the Sapsokoski rapids in Sotkamo and the Arvajankoski rapids in Jämsä has re-opened a combined stretch of almost a hundred kilometres for migratory fish spawning in the two rivers. There are many unnecessary migratory barriers such as defunct dams in Finland, and by removing them, biodiversity can be restored. UPM has completed the restorations of two such projects, Sapsokoski and Arvajankoski rapids.
