As a dear friend, I know Allen would be delighted to see the method he developed more than 30 years ago is still having such a positive impact, even after his death. He has a lasting legacy and continues to help people fight their addictions. Allen worked extensively on applying the method to other issues, drafting a huge quantity of texts before he passed away in 2006. I worked closely with him and was honoured that he entrusted me with the method, in the knowledge that I, along with other senior Allen Carr’s Easyway therapists, was more than capable of editing his texts and updating them as required. A good example of this is how the method has been successfully applied to the recent phenomenon of e-cigarettes as well as to other addictions and issues such as debt and sugar addiction with books covering caffeine addiction, cannabis addiction and a variety of other, so-called harder drug addictions such as heroin & cocaine in the pipeline. Editing Allen’s notes enables us to apply the method to all these other addictions, as well as making sure that in doing so, the method is delivered in a contemporary and up-to-date context.

So much of the thinking surrounding stopping smoking seems to involve negative expectations; that life will be worse as a non-smoker rather than better. It’s really refreshing to see people coming along with positive aspirations rather than expecting the worse. Many of the clients citing ‘enhanced sex life’ as a motivating factor are women. Although the effects of stopping smoking on women can be quite dramatic – in an extremely positive sense – the effect on men is even more intense. And surprisingly more and more men are citing the reason to quit on the confidential questionnaires they complete at our clinics. Whether the increase has anything to do with FIFTY SHADES OF GREY or not – we simply don’t know – but it all seems to have coincided with the popularity of the book and more recently the movie.

Anecdotally – we get emails from women who have attended our clinics which make me blush in terms of the positive impact that stopping smoking has had in that regard.

One anecdote from a client who attended our London clinic sums this up. Apparently his girlfriend dumped him when, during sex, she noticed he had manoeuvred them into a position whereby he could reach his cigarettes and lighter and spark up a cigarette without her noticing him do so – whilst continuing in the act. As soon as she noticed the smoke she kicked him out of bed.

The findings of this report are cause for concern and highlight a generation of young people exhibiting many of the hallmarks of addictive behaviour. The explosion of technology we have seen since the late 90’s offers incredible opportunities to our youth – the constant stimulation provided by access to the internet for example can be a good or a bad thing. There’s a price to pay. This study indicates that huge numbers of young people are developing compulsions and behaviours that they’re not entirely in control of and cannot financially support. Unless we educate our young people as to the dangers of constant stimulation and consumption, we are sleepwalking towards an epidemic of adulthood addiction in the future

As soon as the e-cigarette phenomenon hit the UK we immediately became aware that e-cigarette users were smoking normal cigarettes whenever they could and using e-cigarettes at times when they couldn’t. We also discovered that many of the e-cigarette users who were attending our clinics understood that their intake of nicotine had actually dramatically increased since they started vaping. They found that they vaping inside the home and other places where previously they’d have been forced to go outside to smoke a real cigarette – thus forcing them to cut down

Today, some really big hitters in the anti-tobacco and medical establishment are making a huge mistake by pushing smokers towards e-cigarette use thereby ensuring that they carry on smoking and vaping and therefore in many cases increasing their intake of nicotine

Actually the biggest issue by far is the sudden re-normalisation of smoker/smoker-like behaviour which is already having a huge impact on youngsters picking up e-cigarettes and normal cigarettes

There are no controls over who can sell them, who can buy them, what is in them, and how the product might be advertised. It’s back to the days of Mad Men – using sex to sell slavery and addiction.

Because zero nicotine capsules or liquid can be purchased – youngsters really can say that the e-cigarette they are using is not addictive.

Who knows what damage will be done by the re-normalisation of inhaling an addictive drug orally in public?

The advertising creatives on Madison Avenue can once again use humour & hugely aspirational imagery to sell nicotine addiction!

Is anyone keeping count of the number of former smokers who quit with willpower who are being sucked back into nicotine addiction by unbridled e-cigarette availability, marketing, and advertising?

The Nicotine Industry will lead the field in establishing how harmful or otherwise it may be (and we all know how well that’s turned out in the past).

This is an industry with a proven track record of fraud on a global scale, lies, bribery, corruption, suppression of study data that’s resulted in millions of lives being lost
