Kuusakoski started using its first gas truck for transport in the autumn – gas is becoming more popular with logistics companies
Kuusakoski, a pioneering Finnish company in the recycling business, started using its first compressed natural gas (CNG) truck in early September. Gas is a low-emission alternative to conventional fuels and has a key role in reducing emissions in transport. The use of gas-fueled vehicles has grown at speed in the logistics sector.
The number of gas-fueled vehicles has grown at an amazing rate in the heavy-duty transport sector. The autumn saw Kuusakoski, a pioneering player in the recycling sector, start to use its first gas-fueled truck, which serves customers in the Uusimaa region. Kuusakoski is thinking about acquiring more gas-fueled vehicles in the future.
“We aim to introduce a lower-emission fleet for transport at Kuusakoski. The new vehicle has given us valuable information about a gas-fueled transport fleet. We intend to use this information when buying new vehicles,” says Krister Heinonen, Vice President, Logistics at Kuusakoski.
Expanding the gas filling station network makes it easier than earlier to choose gas-fueled vehicles and is driving companies’ interest in gas. Development of vehicle technology in heavy-duty vehicles and cost efficiency are also driving growing demand for gas.
“We are committed to developing the Nordic gas filling station network. We aim to improve possibilities to fill up with gas and to make it easier for companies to choose environmentally friendlier alternatives. Building a carbon-neutral society requires determined work on the availability of cleaner energy solutions,” says Jani Arala, Senior Sales Manager, Traffic, Gasum.
Gas is the answer to growing demand for greener solutions
Kuusakoski’s new compressed natural gas truck is operated by Helsinki logistics company K&O Tiilikainen, who have a total of six vehicles, two of which run on liquefied natural gas (LNG). Positive comments about all three gas-fueled vehicles have been received from drivers and customers alike.
“Drivers have commended the functionality of gas-fueled vehicles and customers have been delighted with the increase in greener alternatives. We consider it important to help our customers to reach their own targets by providing a new type of environmentally friendlier transport fleet,” says Ossi Tiilikainen, CEO, K&O Tiilikainen.
Compressed natural gas and biogas are suitable for trucks, local delivery and waste transports. Greenhouse gas emissions during the lifecycle of compressed natural gas are around 25% lower compared with gasoline and use of biogas can reduce greenhouse gas emissions over the lifecycle of the fuel by up to 85%.
LNG is suitable for long-distance operations and enables significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in heavy-duty transport. In Finland, delivery and heavy-duty transport accounts for 40% of road transport emissions. Greenhouse gas emissions over the lifecycle of LNG are more than 20% lower compared with, for example, fossil diesel. Use of natural gas generates only a fraction of local emissions such as nitrogen oxides and particulate emissions.
